ML>> Your sister or some other relative?
NB>> Primarily my sister. Also she's getting OT and PT at the house, as
NB>> long as she continues to be improving to their liking so that they can
NB>> justify it to the insurance
ML> Ah. Here I'm staying with my friends Bill and Linda; her mom
ML> is in that same situation, but in this case Linda is the
ML> caretaker, driving half an hour to the home every day (used
ML> to be an hour, but the full-care facility she's been moved
ML> into is closer than the assisted place was).

Been there, done that... and had to be at the care facility with my
friend almost full-time to make sure that she was doing the rehab work
the way she was supposed to, and that they didn't mess up her meds any
more than I couldn't prevent... I fully agreed with my sister that
bringing Mommy back home, to where she lives semi-independently
(usually) with my sister, was much the best idea for her... especially
as she is easily affected by hospital like setting caused delirium... So
I get to drive the 40 minutes or so each way to help out with her care
at home, but it would only have been more onerous probably if we'd let
her go into a rehab setting where we'd still have to be covering things
pretty much 24/7, and she'd be more out of it...

ML>> I could just punt the ticket (there goes $400) or fly back
ML>> and then out again pointlessly (there goes $600 but I get
 ML>> the points).
NB>> When is the service...? Did it already happen...? The extra points
NB>> option seems to hold some appeal, it would appear...
ML> November 17. I'm trying to figure it out. Nobody would give a
ML> care if I showed up or not (actually, some of the old-timers
ML> would be mildly put off if I did), unless there's an afterlife,
ML> and if there is, Gunther probably wouldn't mind my absence,
ML> having better things to do.

So it mostly boils down to whether or not you feel you should be or want
to be there... and whether the extra points give an extra incentive to
do it... ;)

ML>>> Still have a hard time reading no matter what the technique.
NB>>> Hope it settles in eventually... and/or can be tweaked somewhat...
ML>> Or that my brain will adapt (it's become much less adaptable
 ML>> lately).
NB>> The calcification of aging... ;> Maybe it will relent and cooperate
 NB>> after all... :)
ML> No literal calcification I hope, but one does go into ruts
ML> that deepen to the degree that they seem to have become set
 ML> in stone.

Yeah... sometimes possible to break them out, sometimes it seems too
much problem... :)

ML> The reading, though still not particularly comfortable, has
ML> become less confusing, and with adequate light I can make out
ML> the computer screen letters even at 12x16 pixels/character.
ML> Last week I successfully read two books, one chosen for its
ML> shortness (The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett), the other
ML> for its large type (Barbary by Vonda McIntyre).

Bravo. :)

ML> Maybe my attitude still requires adjusting, because I found
ML> both wanting, but in different ways, the former for its
ML> ham-handed stereotyping of all sorts of English types - though
ML> Swiftian satire does paint with a broad brush, one prefers a
ML> hair or two of subtlety now and again -; the second for its
ML> plot holes, of which there are so many one suspects groundwork
ML> for a sequel, of which there was none.

Perhaps you've merely developed a finer-tuned discrimination, with
reading having been so difficult for so long... ;) One does want to
maximize one's efforts especially when one is at a disadvantage...

ML> Gunther's and my relationship, looked on with incredulity by
ML> many owing to our being opposite in most ways, rested on
ML> our mutually confessed assessment that the greatest chef in
ML> the world was Cheong Liew at Grange, which had become known
ML> to him via colleagues in the academic world and to me via
ML> colleagues in the FIDO cooking echo.

Some things just make for a lasting bond... :) And perhaps there were
more, perhaps more subtle, things that you also had in common... :)

 ML> Here's the last recipe
ML> of Cheong's that I have in the collection:
 ML> Spiced prawn sushi
ML> categories: shellfish, starter, Australian, celebrity, misnomer,
 ML> Malaysian servings: 6

Certainly isn't sushi... but it does look like it could be quite
tasty... :)

... If its good, they'll stop making it.
