Glen has been removed to the ward, where in his quad room
even with an empty bed there can be quite a bit of noise -
the guy next jabbers on in Italian both alone and to his
buddies when they visit and on the telephone; the guy across
likes to listen to the ABC news at top volume. I asked Glen
how he could stand it, and he looked up at me placidly and
said, you notice I don't have my hearing aids in. The latter
guy had someone come visit and recount funny stories about
his time in the service, see below - the visitor is about
70, and from other snippets of conversation it appears that
he is the patient's son, which makes the guy in bed, well,
quite elderly.

When I first visited Monday night or Tuesday morning, the
doors to the department were open; since, they have been
locked with a passcode for exiting - one particularly
troublesome patient has been caught several times trying
to escape. He's been deemed incapable of remembering the
code, which is 9 1 1 E. There is another one who is said
to wander up and down the corridor jabbering in some
unknown language, and yet another who would appear at
Glen's bedside claiming that he'd rung him up and told
him to come over. What fun hospitals are.

Never figured that out, but once in a while I get so
unfashionable I'm fashionable.

Combine and force the victim to drink. It is said that
this combination is impossible to stomach and induces
vomiting as well as the finest ipecac.

When Glen was moved to the ward, a visitor to one of
the other beds was recounting stories of his Vietnam
years in the Australian army.

Apparently, there is a peer-administrated Kangaroo Court
that deals with minor offenses as of etiquette and
decorum, and after a quick and unfair trial the accused
is (always) convicted and sentenced to a modest but
unpleasant punishment involving the consumption of the
most vile imaginable combination of otherwise potable
liquids. This combination is apparently a time-honored
recipe designed to cause maximum discomfiture to the
convicted and maximum mirth to the bystanders.
