Swisher took me down to his place on the Kenai. It took a bunch
more time than the usual 3 1/2, because there's tons of road
construction on AK1. Most of this construction is on the most
scenic part of the highway, so the waits are not quite so
irksome as they might be. So after 4 or 4 1/2 hours we were at
his third home - I'd been under the impression that he had
parked the mobile home on a lot owned by some friends, but now
it turns out he bought his own property, turned the mobile
stationary by building a shell around it, including a new 350 sf
guest room, which is being finished up. This room has been
outfitted with 24 electric outlets (12 plates), so I figure a
bunch of computing as well as sleeping is going to be done there
at some point. The lot is of a modest size but has a great view
over a nice but apparently very shallow and quickly eutrophying
lake that has loons, ducks, and other wildlife but no fish worth
catching. He still has to go to the Kasilof River or Crooked
Creek to do his fishing.

Rocky's on the highway in Kasilof, is only a few miles from the
lake. As we are not exactly regulars, we were greeted taciturnly.
We ordered a patty melt and a pulled pork sandwich (pork smoked
and dissected on premises), but the pretty but poker-faced
waitress informed us that it was breakfast (or ice cream, which
was out of the question) until 11:30 (the menu gave the hours
for breakfast, pizza, and dinner but had no such restriction for
sandwiches, but, hey).

So I got chicken-fried steak, which (the menu warned) meal,
counting the two eggs over easy, two slices of wheat toast, and
half pound of hash browns, was served on two plates. Came a
platter for the steak and its country gravy (for dinner it comes
with brown gravy, which I prefer) and a dinner plate for the
other stuff; both were brimful. The steak was mechanically
tenderized but recently and locally and not at a factory, was
the usual round, about a pound, in a crunchy coating, one of
the best versions I've ever had; its gravy was chunky with
meat and heavily saged, not prefab either and made with good
ingredients. Once I reset my taste buds for the herb level, I
enjoyed it very much. The hash browns were done very crisp, the
eggs standard. I got the toast down with the aid of some Smucker's
seedless blackberry jam, which tasted reasonably like berries, and
ended up finishing every single Calorie of what was served.

Bill had half an order of biscuits and gravy, which filled the
platter - it was either four biscuits or two split very tall
ones - and so ate only about half of it. You can get a single
biscuit and gravy, which might have been enough, for 2/3 the price.

He was going to show me a bbq place at Cooper Landing (where my
U of Alaska professor girlfriend had taken me 15 years ago) called
Sackett's. It is supposed to have great pulled pork and a famous
smoked prime rib. It was closed when we went by, another opportunity
missed.
