===============
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> Probably... I've not actually seen her since before I left for
NB> the NB>> Pond for the picnic, since she doesn't come for evening
 NB> service... and

RH> You'll probably see her this week end tho, and give her a big hug.

NB> Yup, she was again in church Sunday morning... there was a reception
NB> after the service out on the front lawn, and they stayed for that,
NB> too. She transfered out of the wheelchair into the pew for the
 NB> service, and
NB> seemed to be doing pretty well at the being on her feet, so that's
 NB> good progress too... :)

Doing quite well, from the sound of things.

NB> NB>> my car turns out to be needing struts replaced (turns out that
NB> was NB>> the noise, not just a bushing), so I'm not driving anywhere
NB> until NB>> that gets fixed.

RH> Do you have another car that Richard drives? It's a good thing that
RH> you had it checked out--the job will cost a bit but not as much as if
RH> you continued driving and it caused more damage.

NB> Yes, Richard has his own car... He's been driving us to the various
NB> things, including his doctor appointment, groceries, church, and now
NB> this week to my appointments... Still waiting on those special ordered
NB> struts to arrive... ;( It certainly is going to be an expensive
NB> fix... but when done, at least I'll have my car back... A previous
NB> car threw a strut and that was the final straw for it... ;)

Frustration is......................can't get to Wegman's when you want,
can't get out to Fu's with a friend while Richard is working, etc. (G)

NB> the NB>> Pond, and it appears that she continues to improve, since
NB> she said NB>> nothing to the contrary...

RH> So it appears she's on the mend.

 NB> Yup.

NB> RH>> In time she will start using it. Does she do any of her meal
NB> fixing? RH>> That could get a bit tricky, leaning over the walker.
NB> Harder, tho RH>> would probably bringing the plate to the table.
NB> NB>> Lydia makes her main meals... including her breakfast oatmeal...
NB> She'd NB>> been mixing up her own supper, Breakfast Essentials in
NB> either dark NB>> chocolate or in french vanilla mixed with milk...
NB> But that was back NB>> when she was mostly just using the quad
NB> cane... Now someone mixes that NB>> up for her, too... :) I
NB> suppose she might be able to get back to

RH> I can imagine she feels frustrated at times, knowing that she used to
RH> be able to do everything without problems but now has to rely on
RH> others. The last 6 months or so before Mom went into the nursing home,
RH> Dad did all of the cooking. Mom would head to the kitchen in late
RH> afternoon, thinking she had to get supper going. Dad would have to
RH> intercept her and get her back to her chair but the habit of so many
RH> years was hard to break.

NB> I dunno... She didn't seem to be all that upset by not having to make
NB> meals any more... Of course, the situation was a little different
NB> than your mom's.... Mommy and Daddy went down to live with Lydia when
NB> it was just getting too much for Mommy to deal with Daddy's
NB> Parkinsons... Until the apartment was built onto the house for them,
NB> they were just staying in a bedroom on the first floor there, so she
NB> got used to be cooked
NB> for... :) Plus, it always had been a joint effort in our house...
NB> and when all the kids had left home, Daddy was as much a cook as Mommy
 NB> was
NB> until he was having his problems...

Sounds like she's got nothing to worry about then.

NB> NB>> that... have the walker to the side while she stands at the
NB> counter to NB>> mix it up, put the glass of "shake" and the small
NB> plate of graham NB>> crackers on the seat of the walker and wheel the
NB> four, five feet to NB>> the table, remove the glass and plate to the
NB> table, and then sit down NB>> at the table.. ;) But that assumes
NB> using the walker mostly for
 NB> NB>> occasional
NB> NB>> stability and insurance rather than depending on it to keep one
 NB> up...

RH> It's possible to do, but would depend on how confident she feels about
RH> doing so. I would think the main concern there would be making sure
RH> the glass was steady enough on the walker seat so it wouldn't spill.

NB> She'd been leaving the cane behind to carry the glass to the table,
NB> back before the surgeries this spring... not all that wise an idea
 NB> even
 NB> then... :)

No, but gave her the sense that she was somewhat independent when it
came to fixing her own meals.

RH> Dad's walker doesn't have a seat; he has a carrier bag on it
RH> (originally made for Mom) for small items. I need to make another one,
RH> somewhat modified, to fit this walker, so that he'll have a back up.

NB> That's a worthy project... :) Mommy actually has two different
NB> walkers, one a rolling walker with a seat, and the other the kind with
NB> just the frame and wheels just on the front... When she's steady
NB> enough on the latter, I imagine she'll graduate back to the rolling
 NB> walker...

Nothing has been mentioned about Dad switching, guess they feel he needs
the stability of the 2 feet on the ground vs a 4 on the floor.
