NB>> Yup, she was again in church Sunday morning... there was a reception
NB>> after the service out on the front lawn, and they stayed for that,
NB>> too. She transfered out of the wheelchair into the pew for the
NB>> service, and seemed to be doing pretty well at the being on her
NB>> feet, so that's good progress too... :)

RH> Doing quite well, from the sound of things.

Not as quickly progressing as we'd hope, but still at least making some
progress.... Lydia's concerned because she still isn't moving her right
foot in front of the left in walking, along with some other things...

NB>>> my car turns out to be needing struts replaced (turns out that
NB>>> was the noise, not just a bushing), so I'm not driving anywhere
 NB>>> until that gets fixed.
RH>> Do you have another car that Richard drives? It's a good thing that
RH>> you had it checked out--the job will cost a bit but not as much as if
RH>> you continued driving and it caused more damage.
NB>> Yes, Richard has his own car... He's been driving us to the various
NB>> things, including his doctor appointment, groceries, church, and now
NB>> this week to my appointments... Still waiting on those special ordered
NB>> struts to arrive... ;( It certainly is going to be an expensive
NB>> fix... but when done, at least I'll have my car back... A previous
NB>> car threw a strut and that was the final straw for it... ;)

RH> Frustration is......................can't get to Wegman's when you
RH> want, can't get out to Fu's with a friend while Richard is working,
 RH> etc. (G)

Especially the etc... (G) We did go to Fu's for supper one night when
he got back from doing the church lawn and decided he wanted to go out,
not eat at home... and again, for lunch, as part of our Tuesday
runnings around... :) But, I've not been able to schedule lunches
with friends, whether at Fu's or elsewhere... ;0 Wegmans we do together
anyway... :)

RH>> I can imagine she feels frustrated at times, knowing that she used to
RH>> be able to do everything without problems but now has to rely on
RH>> others. The last 6 months or so before Mom went into the nursing home,
RH>> Dad did all of the cooking. Mom would head to the kitchen in late
RH>> afternoon, thinking she had to get supper going. Dad would have to
RH>> intercept her and get her back to her chair but the habit of so many
RH>> years was hard to break.

NB>> I dunno... She didn't seem to be all that upset by not having to make
NB>> meals any more... Of course, the situation was a little different
NB>> than your mom's.... Mommy and Daddy went down to live with Lydia when
NB>> it was just getting too much for Mommy to deal with Daddy's
NB>> Parkinsons... Until the apartment was built onto the house for them,
NB>> they were just staying in a bedroom on the first floor there, so she
NB>> got used to be cooked for... :) Plus, it always had been a joint
NB>> effort in our house... and when all the kids had left home, Daddy was
NB>> as much a cook as Mommy was until he was having his problems...

RH> Sounds like she's got nothing to worry about then.

At least she's not being frustrated by not being able to cook for
herself... or confused by not having that as a normal routine...

NB>>> that... have the walker to the side while she stands at the
NB>>> counter to mix it up, put the glass of "shake" and the small
NB>>> plate of graham crackers on the seat of the walker and wheel the
NB>>> four, five feet to the table, remove the glass and plate to the
NB>>> table, and then sit down at the table.. ;) But that assumes
NB>>> using the walker mostly for occasional stability and insurance
NB>>> rather than depending on it to keep one up...
RH>> It's possible to do, but would depend on how confident she feels about
RH>> doing so. I would think the main concern there would be making sure
RH>> the glass was steady enough on the walker seat so it wouldn't spill.
NB>> She'd been leaving the cane behind to carry the glass to the table,
NB>> back before the surgeries this spring... not all that wise an idea
 NB>> even then... :)

RH> No, but gave her the sense that she was somewhat independent when it
RH> came to fixing her own meals.

Or at least her own simple supper.... :) I don't think she's at the
point of even being able to stand at the counter for that length of time
yet, but maybe she'll at least get that much back in time... :)

RH>> Dad's walker doesn't have a seat; he has a carrier bag on it
RH>> (originally made for Mom) for small items. I need to make another one,
RH>> somewhat modified, to fit this walker, so that he'll have a back up.
NB>> That's a worthy project... :) Mommy actually has two different
NB>> walkers, one a rolling walker with a seat, and the other the kind with
NB>> just the frame and wheels just on the front... When she's steady
NB>> enough on the latter, I imagine she'll graduate back to the rolling
 NB>> walker...

RH> Nothing has been mentioned about Dad switching, guess they feel he
RH> needs the stability of the 2 feet on the ground vs a 4 on the floor.

One certainly doesn't want the walker to get away from the patient...
defeats the purpose entirely... :)
