Nicholas had a yen for sorbet, so after taking the scenic
tour of downtown Beverly and not finding anything that
suited, we ended up at Maria's Sweet Somethings in Salem.
The flavors of the century were lemon and raspberry, and
I didn't feel like those, so I went down to the candy
counter and got what I thought was a sensible assortment:

a piece of marzipan - not bad, actually moist, not too
sweet but of extremely modest almond flavor;

a gianduja truffle - they must not sell too many of these,
as it had clearly been around for a while, so the truffle
filling instead of being smooth and unctuous had crystallized
into a peculiar though not wholly unpleasant concoction. The
flavor was very mild as well, and the chocolate outside,
though dark, was flavorless and extremely sweet;

and a piece of dark chocolate coated buttercrunch, which was
both tasteless and stale.

Nicholas, rather enjoying his cup of lemon sorbet, laughed
at me.

It was time to go back to our respective homes, as Nicholas
was tired out (the day after dialysis) and - as it turns out
- Bill had conscripted me to help with a party he was having
that evening.

I snoozed for a couple hours - the temperature was only in the
low 70s, and there was a nice breeze, and then went to set up
for the party, which was for the Greater Boston Tour Guides
Association, of which Bill is or was a board member (let's
face it, musicians have to do a lot of things to make ends
meet).

Bill had ordered wraps and rollups and devilled eggs from the
Stop & Shop, but the store had called him up saying that they
were out of devilled eggs, the shipment hadn't come in. So he
made some himself (he's not a bad cook in a midwestern
grandmotherly way). So of course when he went to pick up the
order, guess what, the eggs had either been found or arrived,
but he said that he didn't want them, as he'd made some, but
they said, take them on the house.

Bill's devilled eggs are made with mustard, mayo, and sweet
pickle relish; they're actually pretty decent. Stop & Shop's
are made with mayo and vinegar, full stop, and they, well,
suck eggs. All his went; many of the others remain, a blight
on the refrigerator. Friends are coming over tomorrow
afternoon. I asked one of them to bring a tin of curry powder,
and I am going to attempt to make curried eggs with the
leftovers. I figure enough onions and curry powder and all
will be made right.

Surprisingly, the wraps and rollups were said to be good,
though as they were all cheesy and mayonnaisey I didn't verify
the testimony.

Cole slaw; watermelon (excellent).

The usual run of drinks, of which I tried two new ones, fruit
beverages from Minute Maid.

Watermelon - I don't know what to make of this. Some people
thought it good, even almost watermelony. I detected no
watermeloniness at all, just a vague generic artificial
fruity sweet flavor. The Intertruth seems to be that it
tastes like watermelon Jolly Ranchers. To me there's no
resemblance with these either. 5% juice: watermelon, grape,
pear, and apple. I'd have hoped for more - watermelons are
very juicy and very cheap; why shouldn't watermelon juice
be cheap enough so they don't have to chintz on it?

Peach - this was almost convincing, with real peach aroma
though not much flavor. Not horribly sweet. Also 5% juice.
