RH>> I think it depends on how long it's down. I can't see it saving much

SH> There are other factors as well such as the source of heat. Heat pumps
SH> should only be raised in increments of 2 degrees to minimize the use
SH> of the supplemental heat strips. Even so, in very cold weather, the
SH> heat strips will be used regardless, or so it was in the place we
 SH> rented for several years.

That sounds to me like good reason not to play with that thermostat
much... just leave it set, and not put it down once one gets things
where they should be... :)

SH> Now we have natural gas heating, so that rule is out. With natural
SH> gas, there does seem to be a big difference on how fast the house
SH> warms up compared to the heat pump. I think the savings would be there
SH> as well since the cost of a BTU generated by burning natural gas is
SH> less than that of a BTU generated by electricity, at least in our
SH> market. I am sure that heating oil would also be different.

Probably differences all around depending on which fuel, and which
system, and, as well, whether the fuel runs a closed system or a forced
air one... and how one does it... :) Richard and a friend of ours
were discussing it recently, and basing their conclusions on what they'd
experienced over the years... We've had oil for the 40+ years we've
been in this house... we have electric baseboard heat at the camp... ;)

SH> To throw a twist into this, my sister and brother-in-law have a
SH> geothermal heat pump which uses circulated fluids in a ground loop as
SH> a source of, or a sink for heat, depending on whether heating or air
SH> conditioning is being used. Since the ground is at a fairly consistent
SH> temperature, it is much more efficient than the normal heat pumps
SH> which have a fan. Those have to deal with a much wider temperature
SH> swing. When the air temperatures are sub-zero, there isn't enough heat
SH> present for the air units to work well.

We've thought about having a geothermal heat pump, but never really done
the homework or seriously priced it... :) But that does indeed seem to
be the more efficient way of heating (and cooling)....

SH> Personally, I feel that setting things at a comfortable temperature is
SH> best, setting it up/down as appropriate only when we expect to be away
 SH> and not every day.

Which is what we've also come to the conclusion of... :) And we've
rarely been away for very long when it's full-blown heating season, so
set-downs usually wouldn't be happening here... :)

SH> These can be heated by adding a bit more ground red pepper.
 SH> Title: Wilton Cheese Crackers

SH> You can use aged Swiss cheese in place of the sharp cheddar.

Or probably, a mix of cheeses... :)

SH> I used Whole Wheat Pastry Flour (soft wheat) in place of the all-
SH> purpose flour. Make sure you let it brown well enough or they will
SH> be soft instead of crisp. You may wish to increase the heat to 400 or
 SH> 425 F.

That sounds tasty... :)
