In 2007, before I knew I had sleep apnea, I was working overnight at a
satellite communications company.  I had my friend Kaare from Denmark (a
former Fidonet sysop) visiting.  I was driving, Kaare was in the passenger's
seat and my now ex-wife was sitting in the back seat.  At the time, we had a
nice little 1994 Honda Civic.  We were heading north out of Hot Springs,
Georgia, after visiting the Roosevelt "Little White House", that it
happened: I fell asleep behind the wheel.  I mean I just collapsed.

Thankfully Kaare, who has never had a driver's license, grabbed the wheel
and woke me up quickly.  It was on a nice straightaway and no other cars on
the road.  However, that bothered me that that actually happened.  The next
time I saw my doctor, I told her, and she arranged for a sleep test (I
already fit the perfect candidate type for sleep apnea).  Sure enough, I had
severe sleep apnea.

She also told me that if I ever fell asleep behind the wheel again and she
found out, she would have my driver's license revoked permanently.  I have
never fallen asleep behind the wheel again, but if I even have a whiff of
tiredness, I pull over and walk around if on a short trip.  On a long trip,
I will stop somewhere to get a snack or find a local attraction to explore.

These days, I very, very rarely get tired during the day since I have a CPAP
machine that I use religiously at night.  I'm also a lot less heavy like I
was then and try to stay fairly hydrated.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Farmer's Strata
 Categories: Ham, Bacon, Potatoes, Casseroles, Cheese
      Yield: 12 Servings
 
      1 lb Sliced bacon, cut into 1/2
           -inch pieces
      2 c  Chopped fully cooked ham
      1 sm Onion, chopped
     10 sl White bread, cubed
      1 c  Cubed cooked potatoes
      3 c  (12 ounces) shredded cheddar
           -cheese
      8    Eggs
      3 c  Milk
      1 tb Worcestershire sauce
      1 ts Dry mustard
      1 pn Salt and pepper
 
  There is one here from Taste of Home (Dec/Jan 96) that a friend of
  mine made when she had quite a few guests for a sleep-over and she
  said everyone just loved it.
  
  In a skillet, cook bacon until crisp; add ham and onion. Cook and stir
  until onion is tender; drain. In a greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking
  dish, layer half the bread cubes, potatoes and cheese. Top with all
  of the bacon mixture. Repeat layers of bread, potatoes and cheese. In
  a bowl, beat the eggs; add milk, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt
  and pepper. Pour over all. Cover and chill overnight. Remove from
  refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Bake, uncovered, at 325 for
  65-70 minutes or until a knife inserted near center comes out clean.
