Aurillac is the next big town I hadn't been to. It has an
imposing central church said to be worthy of a visit, so off 
we went; parked the car in the municipal lot and went into the 
churchyard, only to find that the sanctuary was closed owing 
to a funeral being performed right then. We wandered around 
the old city for a while and then headed out. The length of 
time we allotted to this visit, well, the parking machine 
charged us E0.30.

Last time I was extremely impressed by Puy Mary, so that was
our next destination. It was nice and warm and sunny down in
the valley and for most of the trip up the side of the ridge;
as we approached the summit, though, clouds rolled in rapidly,
and soon we were completely socked in.

The top parking lot is a couple hundred feet down from the
summit, but we couldn't see the summit from even that short
distance. We stayed there an hour and a bit waiting for a
break in the clouds, but none came. We had our lunch -
sandwiches I'd made and some green plums that we'd gotten
a box of somewhere along the line.

Instead of improving, the mist got thicker and thicker, the
temperature dropped to 3, so we beat it out of there via the
supposedly "un des plus beaux villages de France" Salers,
which looked sort of uninteresting, and the weather was
still not cooperating, so we hightailed it home.

Dinner was based on leftovers.

I'd bought a rum, walnut, and vanilla aperitif from Denoix 
just to try, so we started with that - sweet and sour, 
quite vanillaed, some tannin from the green walnuts, on the
whole not very interesting.

Tomato, basil, and olive salad, the first two ingredients
from the garden.

There was an eggplant lasagne that they'd had before and
not cared for, but it had been okay enough to freeze the
leftovers. It had been made from a recipe in the same book
that had offered the zucchini thing. I thought it considerably
better than the zucchini one; I&J said that the melding of 
flavors in the freezer had no doubt improved the dish and that
though they wouldn't have made it again based on first tasting,
they'd consider doing so based on this one, perhaps aging it
a bit before cutting into it.

A reprise of the chicken and morels, of which a few shreds
remained and a remake of cauliflower in cream.

Georges Bertrand Corbieres-Boutenac Cuvee d'Exception 10 was 
another rustic hearty wine, this time from Rhone varietals,
again chosen to go with a tomato-based dish but going actually
quite well with the creamy dishes. Quite good; Ian claims that 
it is increasingly difficult to get bad wine in large part due
to scientific cultivation, harvest, and production; by the same
token, differentiation among styles and producers has been
minimized, a gain and a loss both.

Dessert: home-canned home-grown peaches, of very fine flavor
but a bit soft in texture, and that homemade peach sorbet again.
