I can recall discussions in the echo from a long time ago about copyright
and recipes.  Karen Mintzias got particularly concerned, and that
concern might have contributed to why she stopped posting.  There were
some who posted references that claimed that no recipe could be subject
to copyright restrictions since a recipe was nothing more than a list of
ingredients.  OTOH, discussion that accompanied that recipe might be
subject to protection of intelectual property rights if it had original
content.   My interpretation of that would be that individual recipes
have no intellectual property protections, but that collections such as
church cookbooks might be protected in the whole.  Books such as the
Frugal Gourmet's Immigrant Ancestors which have considerable discussion
about a cusine as well as recipes would have copyright protection on the
discussion, but not on the recipes themselves.

      Title: DOUBLE CHOCOLATE TREASURES
 Categories: Cookies, Holidays
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
      2 c  Flour
    3/4 c  Cocoa
      1 ts Baking soda
    1/2 ts Salt
      1 c  Butter, softened
    2/3 c  White sugar
    2/3 c  Light brown sugar, packed
      1 ts Vanilla
      2    Eggs
      1 pk 10 oz large semisweet
           Chocolate pieces or 2 - 12
           Oz packages small pieces
    3/4 c  Chopped pecans or other nuts
 
  Preheat oven to 350F. In a small bowl, combine flour, cocoa, soda,
  and salt and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter with
  sugars, vanilla, and then add eggs. Mix flour mixture with butter
  mixture. Add chocolate and nuts.
  
  Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 9-12 minutes.
