What I got for Christmas

I think my friends think that this army of one flies on its
stomach, and this stomach is powered by chocolate. This is
what I got.

Purity Candy dark almond bark - pretty good but too sweet 
dark chocolate surrounding a large proportion of explosively 
crisp obviously recently roasted almonds. The chocolate, 
with a decent snap and fairly good aroma, had that woody 
taste and slight traces of that strange aroma that one gets 
in products that have traveled great distances, even though 
this had been manufactured 12 miles away from where I was
graciously given it. It's not every day that the nuts 
overshadow the chocolate, but this was one of those days. 
Still, a B+.

Norm Thompson chocolate-dipped glace apricots - Texturally 
very intriguing, the chocolate hard and falling off, the 
fruit tender with a little crisp bite inside and a somewhat 
tacky outside, seemingly partway between fruit and gummies. 
Mild but nice apricot flavor. Not terribly sweet, but I am 
used to apricots that even if candied have a little more 
acid; this didn't make much of a downgrade, though. The  
chocolate couverture was not as chocolaty as it might have 
been. A-

And a bunch of El Guapo products -

Chile tepin - quite hot - I used three in a serving of
chili and found the heat adequate. Not a whole lot of 
flavor, though. Probably useful for kicking it up a
notch, not for much else. B

Chile pequin - almost as hot as the above but with a
very appetizing smoky flavor. I liked these a lot. A-

Chile de arbol - interesting greeny vegetal flavor,
gainsaying the deep red ripe color. On cooking, a
little pepper aroma came out. These were hotter than
other peppers labeled as arbol that I have had. B-

Ground hot New Mexican chile - hot is a bit of an
overstatement here - I used this to spice up my
basic chili, and it seemed to me that the heat level
went down if anything. A bit of chile aroma but a
disappointing lack of fruitiness and sweetness on
the tongue. A disappointment. C

Late newsflash. Lilli got me a one-way ticket from
Penang to Hong Kong, with a 2 1/2 hour layover in
Kuala Lumpur to visit with her at the Malaysia club,
a $164 value.
