I never bought into it fully - but, I was always a bit cynical.

It's easier the shunt those requests off to Santa than to deal with them 
directly. And it teaches the crumbdoon about deferred compensation/pleasure.

That's a good deal for the charity. Maybe not so good for the swimsuit 
customer. Just learned that the Interfaith Breakfast at Br'ith Sholom ran out 
of pancake mix about an hour into the event. Of course, being 25 December 
nearly everything was closed. Local IHOP to the rescue. They're open 24/7/365 
locally. They provided a whole bag of their mix and refused payment, saying 
somewhat ironically, "It's the Christian thing to do." Not being one to look 
askance at either end of a gift horse Rabbi Datz accepted in the spirit it was 
offered.   Bv)=

      Title: Sweet Charity Pie
 Categories: Pies, Cheese, Fruits, Nuts, Dairy
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      1 c  Flour
      1 c  Fine chopped pecans
    1/4 c  Brown sugar
    1/2 c  Butter; softened
      8 oz Cream cheese; softened
    1/2 ts Almond extract
      1 c  Powdered sugar
     21 oz Can cherry pie filling
      8 oz Carton cool whip

      1 c  Whipping cream
 
  Preheat oven to 375oF/190oC.
  
  In a medium bowl combine flour, pecans, brown sugar and
  butter. Use two butter knives or a pastry blender to cut
  in the butter. Mix until well combined and crumble forms.
  Spread crumb mixture into a sheet cake pan and bake for
  15-20 minutes until golden brown, stirring once half way
  through.
  
  Let cool, then press crumbs into a 9" round pie pan,
  reserving 1 cup of the crumbs for later. Refrigerate to
  completely cool.
  
  In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, and
  almond extract. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  
  In another bowl, combine cherry pie filling and cool whip
  (or whipping cream).
  
  Spread the cream cheese mixture over the top of the crumb
  crust in the pie dish. Some of the crumbs might lift as
  you try to spread the cream cheese layer. It helps if you
  dollop the cream cheese mixture all over the top of the
  crust, then try to spread.
  
  Top with the cherry pie-cool whip mixture.
  
  Cover with the crumbs you reserved earlier. I used about
  1/2 cup, but feel free to use the entire cup if you want.
