Even Glen Jamieson agrees it's complicated! And that's just the
inner core, kids who call me Papa Jim. Because of a number of horny,
irresponsible young men in the past, Ray and Raine have an older
half sister, Neekha has a younger half-brother, and Lexi has both a
22 year old mother of two as a half sister and a 2 year half-
brother. As well, Lyle has raised a stepson who is a bit older than
his own two kids.

Lexi has a really good grasp of genealogy (she can tell you the
difference between a first cousin once removed and a second cousin,
when many adults can't) but she doesn't like using extraneous labels
like step or half when she describes family she's close to. "That
man is my big sister's big brother, so he's my brother too."

So far, I have managed to avoid all of those as well as their
Canadian cousins and clones like East Side Mario's, Montana's BBQ &
Bar (Montana's Cookhouse) and Kelsey's Neighbourhood Bar & Grill.

Absolutely.

Oh, I already knew. It's been a long, long time since I had a truly
good airport or airline meal.

Best Christmas present: a tasting box of seven little nips, 30 ml
bottles, of J.& M. Lehmann's Eaux de vie. It was a blind grab at one
of those gift exchanges where you can steal other people's presents,
at the jail's staff Christmas party where the gifts were supposed to
be under $20. I suspect some unsophisticated Newfy guard re-gifted
this without knowing what it was because the label was all in
French.

Lehmann wasn't a known name to me so I googled it. They are a small
family company, self described as a Distillerie Aerisanale in Alsace
who have been distilling premium spirits since 1850. They have been
awarded an EPV label (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant [Living
Heritage Company]) by the French state as a mark of recognition for
French firms for excellence of traditional skills. They sell their
product only in France and Quebec. (The label is French only, not
bilingual do it couldn't be sold elsewhere in Canada.)

The box contains five of their many Eaux de vie: Kirsch, Poire
William, Marc d'Alsace Gewurztraminer (marc, like grappa, is brandy
made from pomace), Framboise, and Quetsch (plum) and two liqueurs:
Poire William and Framboise. This particular selection is no long
listed on Quebec's SAQ (provincial government liquor board) but
their 700 ml bottles run from $80 to $218 each, so that box had to
retail in Quebec for at least $50 if not more.

I just sipped my first one, the Kirsch. Like any other 90 proof
white, unaged brandy it's raw and hot but it is also slightly sweet,
has a subtle yet distinct cherry and almond nose and a delayed,
intense burst of flavor at the back of the mouth. It is perhaps the
best quality Schnaps that I have ever encountered. I am going to
hoard the remaining six for special occasions when I want to treat
myself. Roslind has graciously requested just tiny 1/4 ounce sips
from each one ounce bottle.
