===========================
Hi Michael,

ML> > ML> Well, the amount of driving a professional trucker
ML> > ML> does would put regular folks in the dust. Same with
ML> > A trip like the one we just had is probably a regular occurance for
 ML> > some.

ML> Some people make their living on cross-countries.

I like having the stability of a place where I can spend some time if I
want. Constant cross country-ing would wear me out fast.

ML> > ML> the days in the month - they still are on airplanes
ML> > ML> a bunch more than all but the most fanatical frequent
 ML> > ML> flyers.
ML> > And they cover a lot more miles than truckers do. Truckers, as a
 ML> rule,

ML> Dirty Dave admits to 150000 miles a year in his heyday,
ML> which is less than long-haul airplane crews (and passengers
ML> as well, but very few of those), but there are plenty of
ML> people who put in the hours on short flights.

Hopefully with enough time off to have a well established home base. A
place to do laundry (without shelling out a gazillon quarters), make a
decent cup of coffee (or tea), your choice of how firm (or soft) you
want the bed on a particular night--much nicer than constantly short
hopping or cross country-ing.

ML> I was once on a delayed plane with a guy who claimed to
ML> fly a million miles a year!; we were sweating out the
ML> same connection in Philly after a transcon, but he said
ML> with utmost confidence that they would hold the flight
ML> for him (and by extension, me). We came in a quarter
ML> hour or more after the next plane was scheduled to
ML> depart, and guess what, they held it.

He had a good "pull" with airlines; we'll never reach that mark.

ML> > have access to better food than the snacky type things available on
 ML> most > airplanes tho.

ML> Some must take advantage of that.

Some do, I think most don't in today's setting. Why pay an outrageous
price for stuff you don't like/want when you can pay the same for a
McGreaseburger at the airport fast food joint and carry it on to the
plane with you? (G)

ML> > ML> I'd go out of my way to avoid such a place. Not that
ML> > ML> I want any restaurant to fail, but, well, maybe I'll
ML> > ML> make an exception and hope that BBQ place gets a worthy
 ML> > ML> successor.
ML> > Time will tell. The bbq place seemed to be doing quite well. It was
ML> > sometimes hard to get a table in there--they didn't have many tables
ML> and > those they had were kept full.

ML> I wonder what happened. Owner died or lost interest?

I've no idea, don't think he died. I think he spread himself too thin as
he owned several other places in the Raleigh area.

ML> > ML> The same price evolution at both of my prime rib go-tos.
ML> > ML> 'tis too bad. No wonder my bank account is hard to see
 ML> > ML> without a magnifying glass these days.
ML> > We don't go out for prime rib as often as we did when it was
ML> cheaper. > Then too, when it was $9.95, they sold out fast. When they
ML> raised the > price, they also started cooking more. It was hard to get
 ML> in to the
ML> > place (very limited parking and seating) but the food was worth it.

ML> And did they find an optimal level to make the most
ML> money with the least effort?

I don't know--they've expanded (taking out another small restaurant) but
they're usually crowded out on Friday and Saturday nights. Still
bringing in a lot of people but since they don't do tableside order
taking, etc, they're putting out less effort than a lot of places.

ML> > ML> Really fresh shellfish is worth a lot, but it's getting
ML> > ML> a bit too costly for me itself. I hope I'll find something
ML> > ML> here that's reasonable in price but won't give me Sultan
 ML> > ML> Ismail's revenge.
 ML> > Don't want that.

ML> The Sultan has been dodged so far, but all I've had
ML> in that way has been shrimp.

How much longer are you there?

ML> lots > of other interesting places to try for a meal so we don't
ML> neccessarily > have to go to Besh's. Appetisers there were pricier
ML> than what we paid > for meals at both Mother's and Mulatte's.

ML> Mulate's was pretty okay, except when they actually
ML> substituted chicken nuggets for the alligator bites
ML> that were on the menu (this really, really irritated
 ML> me).

I'd be quite put out as well. Steve had the allegator, and as far as we
know, it was all allegator.
