Best of all, one of the dinner guests got wind of my
experiment and ran to the bakery to get focaccia, which
though not fitting quite into the menu did taste very good.

I don't know who the diagnosing hematologist was; I get
only what I can glean from his e-mail cc:s, including
those to his work colleagues and my father's former
associates (usually different sets of content, and I am
certainly getting a picture carefully crafted to what he
wants me to think).

He hasn't deigned to accept the care of a hematologist
yet. I haven't decided whether this attitude is a part
of the psychiatric condition or just orneriness on his
part. I figure if he wants to live he'll figure it out
himself; I can offer some support and hand-holding, but
beyond that, nothing. This from a recent e-mail:

 > I shall keep shopping around for a hematologist
 > but, unlike the situation with the psychiatrist,
 > I think that I shall come to a final decision
 > sooner rather than later.  If they all say the
 > bone-marrow biopsy is necessary, then I guess
 > that I have to follow their advice.


Beremeal bannocks
categories: bread, scots
yield: 1 batch

8 oz flour
1 ts salt
1 ts cream of tartar; heaped
2 ts baking soda; heaped
8 oz beremeal; sub barley flour
2 oz butter
1 pt buttermilk

Sift first 4 ingredients; then add beremeal. Rub in butter;
then mix in buttermilk to make a dough. Cook on a hot
griddle for 2-3 min on a side.
