=================
ML> myself and in fact tipped half the glass into a pot of
ML> meat sauce I was making. Bad idea - the tomatoes or
ML> something brought out the cat pee and it took two
ML> reheatings and lengthy simmers to get rid of the odor.
 NB> Definitely a bad move... ;0

I've made a second batch, to which I have so far resisted
putting the Mezzacorona Pinot Noir into. Which upon being
uncorked (unscrewed, actually) for the day actually sort of
mellowed out into ordinary bad wine.

ML> get some outlandish snacks. I made another mistake and
ML> took a polite toke - I don't care for the feel of smoke
ML> in my lungs, nor for the taste of the stuff, nor for
ML> its supposed beneficial psychoeffects -; it reawakened
ML> my bronchitis, and for two days I've been coughing my
ML> lungs out again: stupid boy.
NB> Another bad move... all around... ;)

Further, Court, who has a chronic cough from overindulging
in all things smoked, has come down with a horrendous one
that has me suspicious for my future, as my throat has
itself begun to scratch again with new diseased zeal.

ML> Warheads sour chewy cubes - these are gummies about the
ML> same size as sugar cubes, coated in powder that turned out,
 ML> disconcertingly, to be sugar.
NB> What else would it have been...?

The real Warheads were coated in citric acid, or maybe
fumaric. Acid anyway.

ML> cotton candy - pale blue, a good thing, but also very
ML> pale in flavor; a hint of sweetness, a hint of sourness,
ML> maybe a suspicion of artificial vanilla flavor. Disappointing.
ML> A blue raspberry version sits in the freezer awaiting my
 ML> delectation.
 NB> Was it any better..?

I'd saved it for a rainy day ... but your query spurred me
to action - and I report: deep blue, a good thing, but with
no flavor at all, just a hint of sweetness and a slightly
more pronounced hint of sourness. 100% without merit other
than the color.

ML> texture was hard and nasty, though. Again, a watermelon
ML> version lurks in the freezer waiting for tomorrow.
NB> I bet the mango was better than the watermelon... ;)

You bet right. The watermelon had no resemblance to its
fruit. A mild vanillalike taste followed by a hit of acrid
bitterness that I can't describe or account for. Very bad.

=

ML> was purely neurological, not immunological.
 NB> Nasty bug.

A particularly nasty one, and as above I am sorry to report
that round two may be a-comin'.

ML>> not what I expected when I met Lilli on the plane to embark
ML>> on this adventure. On the other hand, I've seen some glorious
 ML>> sights, animate and inanimate.
 NB>> At least not a total loss, that's a good thing. :)
ML> Great times, just filtered through a filter of discomfort
 ML> and sometimes real pain.
NB> Sigh. Probably not too likely that you'd get a chance to try it again
 NB> (hopefully in better health)...?

There are other places to go and things to do, and if I
budgeted time and money to revisit all the places where
my experiences were imperfect, that would be 40 years of
backtracking.

NB>> It did make for an sort of running joke thru the picnic... ;) I'd
NB>> not be surprised to find out that they were having as much fun with the
NB>> avoidance as they'd've had with the accomplishment... ;)
ML> It was sort of funny, and they certainly did not discourage
ML> me by saying, look, we want our chow mein NOW!
NB> Nope. :) Maybe it'll become a picnic "mascot"... the unopened cans
NB> of chow mein, showing up at successive picnics... ;)

The durian of the future.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.07

      Title: Chow Mein (Chicken)
 Categories: Chinese, Chicken
   Servings: 4

      4 c Chicken broth
      2 c Diced celery
      1 c Diced onion
1 c Chopped cabbage (bok choy if
           -available)
      2 tb Peanut oil
  1 1/2 c Sliced fresh mushrooms
  1 1/2 c Fresh bean sprouts
      2 tb Dark molasses
      1 tb Soy sauce
      1 tb Butter
      2 Eggs, beaten
      4 To 5 Tbl cornstarch
1 lb Cooked, boned chicken, torn
           -into bite-size shreds
      1 cn Chow mein noodles

In a saucepan, bring the chicken broth to simmer. Add the celery, onion,
and cabbage. Simmer, stiring occasionally, until the celery is soft.

Heat the peanut oil in a large skillet or wok. Saute the mushrooms until
they begin to soften. Add the bean sprouts; cook and stir until they are
soft. Use a slotted spoon to place the celery, onion, and cabbage in the
skillet. Add the molasses and soy sauce. Stir and cook, adding enough
broth to keep it moist and loose.

Melt the butter in a small pan over medium-high heat. Cook the eggs until
firm, with minimal stirring. You want an "egg pancake". Remove the eggs
from the pan, season to taste, and slice into thin strips.

Dissolve the cornstarch in the remaining chicken broth. Stir into the
vegetables in the wok, and stir as the mixture thickens. Add torn chicken
  and heat through.

To serve, put a layer of chow mein noodles on each plate and heap with the
chicken and vegetable mixture. Top with the shreds of eggs.
