================
RUTH HANSCHKA Said to DAVE DRUM about Circling

-> -> NONE of the "dollar" stores are truly "dollar" stores. Except
-> -> "DEALS - Nothing Over A Dollar" of which we have one somewhere in
-> -> town cheap trinkets and schlock.

-> SR> Once upon a time they were. They'd have closeouts and
-> SR> days I get some of the same things in a job lot chain.

-> Ocean State? Or Big/Odd Lots? We have a Big Lots closeout place
-> here in one of

SR> Ocean State is the big one here; there's a Big Lots in another
SR> shopping mall, but I've never been in it. Too far to walk after
SR> doing the store I actually need to hit in the same area.

I've never been in an Ocean State (living FAR from the ocean). From
descriptions and business model there seems to be not a lot to choose between
them and Odd/Big Lots.

-> the strip malls. I've scored some really nifty bargains there.
-> Such as the 28 quarts (all they had) of Trappey's Red Devil
->Hot Sauce for a dollar a bottle.

-> Or the 46 cans (once again I cleaned the shelf) of Polar Crab
-> Meat in Water for 75c/can.

SR> ((slurp)) I could get into that.

Not good for crab cakes - but good in crabmeat stuffing or in soups. And, at
that price less expensive than Krab.

-> I'm going to sound like an old fart here - but, when I was in
-> school, swapping recipes for dirt with Moses and Aaron, girls
-> didn't start to "sprout" until high school - except in rare
-> cases, Like Annette Funicello from the Mickey Mouse Club.

-> Now it's not uncommon to see third graders with a full rack.

RH> Can't say I've ever seen that. Most girls when I was in school were
RH> about 12 or 13.

The time period I was talking about was in the 1950s.

You are somewhat younger than I and the effect had already taken root by the
time you were a late pre-teen or early teen.

-> was raised on the family farm or near by. The people worse off
-> didn't eat beef except on very rare occasions. Then came cattle
-> feeder operations, low cost beef and McDonald's with hamburger
-> beef from Zoroaster only knows where and how raised.

-> Anyway, Dan wrote a grant proposal and got a million or more
-> pazuzas to study the subject and my W.A.G. was proved correct.
-> Now he's working on whether that same estrogen in beef inhibits
-> puberty in boys. (Another grant - your tax dollar$ at work.)

RH> Well, if it's inhibited that's a good thing. The poor girls get a
RH> chance to grow up a bit before the boys bother them.

The ancient barnyard dance has always been with us, and always will be with us.
World without end. So be it. (Amen, IOW)
