I hear you.  A somewhat necessary evil...

I'd think that perhaps the former could be put aside if he showed less
sign of mental incompetency (probably a fruitless hope)... general
incompetency, as long as he doesn't continue to mash the car, tends to
be eventually left behind...

They can't imagine anyone walking on purpose, eh...?  When such better
modes of transport are available...?  ;)  Ah, well...  Of course,
there's the gossip component... I gather this is a fairly small town
setting...?

At one point, Daddy was driving using Mommy's eyes...  I rode along
ONCE... after that I made sure to drive them if I was to be in the same
car...!  Actually, I think it was very soon after that ride with them
that Mommy took over the driving... only marginally better, as she tends
to be a timid driver...
