Though when I was eating storebought apples, there were
many more available varieties, and they tasted distinct
and in most cases better. It wasn't until the '70s and
'80s that Delicious apples stopped being delicious, but
it is my contention that there has been no improvement.

Sad to say there was a great loss, Baldwins and white
peaches being among them; though I knew a lady in
Harpswell, Maine, whose white peach survived those
harsh winters and may live to this day. It's possible
that some Baldwins may have survived, but I didn't see
any in farm stands between then and when I quit going
to farm stands.

I would if I could. It's easier for me to do so in
Singapore or Hawaii, or France, Germany, and Italy
for that matter than out here.

Here in the east, Concords are labrusca pure and simple. Makes
sense that the varieties vary geographically and that they
interbreed, though I wish that species were currently defined
as they were designed to be defined, with breeding compatibility
high on that list: if labrusca and aestivalis should be separate
species, why not white and black people, and you can see where
that slippery slide might end up. V. aestivalis is a grape that
I have hitherto heard of once only, as the grape that makes up
one of my favorite wines (perhaps mostly because of its name,
though it tastes pretty good), the Horton Norton.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.02

      Title: Hot Apple Soup
 Categories: Soups/stews, Cyberealm
      Yield: 4 servings

      4    Green apples (Granny Smith)
      4    McIntosh apples
  2 1/2 c  Water
      2 tb Lemon juice
    1/4 ts Nutmeg
    1/2 ts Cinnamon
      1 c  Light cream
           Unsweetened whipped cream,
           -for garnish

  Peel, core & quarter apples.   Combine all ingredients except cream in
  saucepan & bring to boil.  Simmer 15 min. till applesa are soft.
  Puree; return to pan; add cream & heat through but don't boil.
  Garnish each serving with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream and a
  sprinkle of cinnamon.

  You can even serve this soup for brunch - it's a Fall soup, when
  apples are a part of the celebration.
