At dinnertime, which my stomach told me was around eight, I
went up and down 23rd St looking at menus; the Sports Pub
particularly beckoned with an offer of a "6 oz hand cut filet
mignon" with baked potato and corn on the cob for $10; also
the Thai places looked kind of forlorn, despite fairly good
notices, and I felt sorry for them, thinking of the proprietors'
kids' college funds going down the tubes, if they couldn't get
a clientele on Friday night. And then of course there is the
strip joint across the street, which serves a reportedly decent
pound of prime rib for $15, the only catch being that the
strippers circulate among the tables between dances and
aggressively solicit tips and some say a bit more. Ended up at
some joint I hadn't noticed before (it's less than a year old).

Bistro 7107 appears to be a family-owned-and-run place, with what
appears to be Filipino mom and dad supervising the kitchen,
daughter (at least as cute as what I'd have seen at the strip
club, but with more clothes) waiting on tables, and unseen
non-English-speaking aunties cooking in back. 

I had to order the lumpiang Shanghai so as to report on them.
They were twice as expensive as they ought to be at $8 for six
halves, thin, multi-wrapped in a way that would make xxcarol's
heart happy and deep-fried in a way that would elate mine. These
were stuffed with chicken, bad (pork is so much better); cabbage,
good; no carrots or transparent noodles, bad; lots of garlic,
good. They were also cut in half before frying, weird. The dipping
sauce offered was Sriracha, good.

Pork muscovado was fried odd bits (two ribs, some belly meat, about
10 oz total) with a brown sugar sauce, sided by green mango and
cucumber salad. Pity about the cucumber. The frying was a bit over,
as one of the rib bones had the same texture as the meat around it,
and I'd not order it again (or perhaps the signature $17 fried whole
foreleg of pig, which had tempted me) if I came back, which is
possible but not soon. Decent rice.

There's no booze but rather soft drinks at $1.50 and canned juice
or lemonade from a plastic jug for $2. The lemonade was a sweet
nothing, but the refill came free and unbidden.

Afterward I needed something to knock me out so the Virginia state
store beckoned. Turns out it has just liquor, no beer or wine, so I
got 200 mL of Courvoisier (4 nips' worth, 6 or 7 "standard drinks"),
most of which went right down over the next two hours, the remainder
instead of breakfast. I think I was entitled to breakfast coupons, as
the club here is closed on weekends, but Lilli wasn't there to want
breakfast, and I generally prefer no breakfast to breakfast, and
now that I think about it I'd have been too early for the served one
but might have been able to wangle a takeaway one to eat on the plane.
