ML>> So the obvious remedy is to add natural and artificial
 ML>> watermelon flavor.
 NB>> Right.
ML> Of course. That's what they do to orange juice, after all.

Unless it's the fresh squeezed stuff, "not from concentrate", and all
that...

ML> Supermarket seckels couldn't be naturally ripened drops: they
ML> were of course picked unripe just like everyone. I remember

Of course... I knew that... hard to control those high apple-pie in the
sky-y-y hopes, though... (G)

ML> the first time I tasted a ripe Bosc ... wonderful, but I'd
ML> grown used to unripe crunchy Boscs and continue to eat them
ML> in that condition on the rare occasions when I can find them
ML> at all. By the way, supermarket Boscs these days never ripen
 ML> and worse, never sweeten.

Yeah, I've noticed... I've also been accustomed to the crunchy Bosc...
but they did used to be sweeter than you find now... I've found the
occasional perfect red pear... but it's hard to get it just ripe and not
rotten, especially supermarket ones...

ML> At Weggie's I saw a display of black plums with the notation
ML> "ripe in 1 or 2 days." I felt a couple up and decided that
ML> a week or never was more like. Perhaps I should have picked
ML> some up just to see, but I'm no more likely than anyone to
ML> put money on such a long shot.

That's what those paper ripening bags are supposed to help with. I'm
more partial to the plumcots, although they've not been as wonderful as
when they were first introduced, either... I did get one just before my
Colorado trip that was Just ripe enough to be enjoyed, not quite fully,
but I needed to eat it that day, as I was leaving in the morning...

ML> We picked up a pineapple on our shopping, and upon skinning
ML> and trimming, Annie and Robbie both decided it looked rotten
ML> and throw awayable. I intervened. It was the most delicious
ML> pineapple I've ever had in the continental United States,
ML> better even than most of the ones I've had on Hawaii. Once
ML> in a while good things happen. I have not in recent memory
ML> had that happen with apples.

Perfectly ripe pineapple is a joy indeed... and very hard to come by in
these parts... :) And, as your story indicates, not readily recognized
since it is so uncommon... I wonder how many times they'd tossed a
similarly wonderful one in the past... maybe they'll recognize it now..?
Or were you the only one that partook...? As to apples, sniff... I've
not got any recent experience with them... maybe it's just as well...

ML> better, well, au revoir. Speaking of which, the last batch of
ML> Chiquitas I had were really dead-tasting, worse than green ones
ML> usually taste, though they were nice yellow coming on with brown
ML> spots. They tasted okay taken with alternate bites of chocolate.

I've been mostly disappointed with bananas, too... but then, they're one
of the things that I tend to eat sparingly as they rarely sit well for
me unless quite ripe, so I was only buying them for MJ... Chocolate
does help them... banana splits are still usually enjoyable... ;)

... All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt
