======================
Hi Michael,

RH> But then you have two working wrists/no carpal tunnel.
ML> You do have a good portable appliance for such purposes, though.
 ML> Called a Steve.
RH> When he's not busy with other things.

 ML> He's a busy fella, but 1 minute of eggplant peeling doesn't
ML> seem like a major outlay.

It usually isn't but I didn't want to disturb him. He was on a roll with
his train of thought so I didn't want him to slip on the butter and get
derailed. I know better than to try. (G)

ML> A good article about the badness of tomatoes by the not
ML> invariably accurate but always interesting Gina Kolata at
 ML> the New York Times - tinyurl.com/cu62gm5 .
RH> Badness as in lack of flavor or what? I understand they're trying to
RH> isolate the flavor genes and put them back into mass market tomatoes
RH> now. Still, nothing like a home grown one unless you know the farmer
 RH> that raised it.

ML> Gist: the same gene that made for early wonderful red ripening
ML> also made for bland flavorless flesh. A classic case of you
ML> win some and you lose more.

I know. Got a couple of good looking ones at the farmer's market today.
Also picked up some red/purple bells, poblanos, banana peppers, a
cucumber, a small purple eggplant and a couple of small yellow squash
in the produce line. From the Flour Patch I got a couple of swiss,
mushroom & spinach empanadas and a couple of whole wheat cinnamon rolls.

RH> And, probably most of it in the last decade or so, especially since
RH> you and Lilli started wandering the globe.

ML> I did a lot in the '90s with Benita, but now it seems to be
ML> happening with a vengeance, with Lilli approaching her use-by
ML> date and me not all that far behind.

It's been interesting reading your travelogues. Do you save them into a
travels file so you can go back and re-read them?

ML> You made a virtue of it; many who don't care for the
ML> foreign experience have not done so - I've talked to
ML> some of these, who thought that their overseas stint
ML> courtesy of Uncle Sam was enough for a full lifetime.
RH> They really missed out on so much! We knew families like that when we
 RH> were stationed in Germany.

ML> It's kind of sad, but when life gives some people lemons they
ML> can't resist rubbing them in their eyes.

Agreed, and years from now, they will probably probably regret that they
didn't take advantage of the opportunities they had. Some will, anyway;
others will be happy never to wander more than 10 miles from home.

RH> FWIW, the perscription potassium pills are Klor-Con 20M tablets, don't
RH> know anything more on them.
ML> That's a 20 mEq dose, or 16 times the dose that Dirty Dave takes.
ML> I would recommend 1/2 ts of salt substitute in a glass of water
ML> as an equal dose at somewhat less cost.
RH> I only took them for a week so the cost was minor. By taking the
RH> perscription ones, it gave me the exact dosage the P.A. wanted for the
 RH> blood test.

ML> The label indications for Klor-Con are for cases that cannot
ML> tolerate the liquid supplement (such as I suggest) - the risk
ML> is that the pills will damage the stomach lining. Another common

I always took the pills with food so I'd have a buffer.

ML> potassium supplement is an effervescent orange-flavored drink,
ML> which led a classmate in high school to kipe a dose or two under
ML> the mistaken impression that the foil-encased medicine was in
ML> fact elemental K. Poor silly soul tried to light the gas that
ML> was emitted while I laughed at him. He was expecting 2 (K + HOH)
-> 2 KOH + H2 and instead got something with a large amount of
ML> CO2, which persistently kept putting out his matches.

I've read of lighting gas. It seems to be a guy thing.

 ML> Crab Norfolk
ML> Categories: southern, living, shellfish, main
 ML> Yield: 4 servings

We thought about buying some crabmeat at the farmer's market today but
decided not to. Guess we might next time the seafood folks come, and try
this.

Catch you later,
