=====================
Hi Nancy,

RH> picked me up from the airport we were going to go for Greek food at a
RH> nicer sit down place. On the way, we spotted a Middle Eastern place and
RH> decided to give it a try as it was time we both needed something to eat
RH> & didn't really want to wait any longer. Went in, it was a gyro type
RH> place--it was ok, but not great. Most of them do offer gyros, shish
RH> kebabs, platters...............in beef, chicken, or lamb so you do get
RH> a variety of choices. Not quite as fast food as McD's or BK or any of
RH> that ilk but we don't mind the wait.

NB> Most of the fast-ish food versions of Middle East I've seen locally
NB> have been stalls at neighborhood festivals or similar... or at the
NB> county or state fair... no fixed location places that I've found

Keep looking, there's bound to be a quick place somewhere in the greater
Rochester area. If not, then enjoy the gyros at the street fairs and
such like places. One of the places in WF we go to set up at a "Meet in
the Street" in May; we wandered the street for a bit, then hit them up
for lunch.

 NB> yet... Agreed
 NB> that it's usually a better alternative to the McD's, BK's etc... :)

Not hard to be better than most of those places.

NB> NB>> That sounds like an interesting place, all told... :)

RH> It was good. There are a couple (owned by the same person) here in
RH> Wake Forest we go to from time to time. I took a friend to one last
RH> year; she'd never had that kind of food before but enjoyed it.

 NB> It's good food. :)

I forget when we first came across it, if it was in Germany or before,
but we've been enjoying it for at least 20 years.

NB> NB>> That was good of them... I'd be inclined more to go for sweet
NB> potato NB>> fries, or, if available, eggplant fries... :)

RH> Sorry, but neither of them were an option. You could have had tabouli,
RH> grape leaves or the salad as subs for the fries. The tsatzki was a bit
RH> on the mild side, not much of a garlic "bite" to it, sigh!

NB> Can't have it all... sigh... ;) Tabouli or grape leaves might have
NB> been what I'd've gone for, then... :)

I would have gone for the tabouli at one time, possibly the grape leaves
but went for the salad as it was lower carb.

RH> Just have to make your need known and most places will accomodate. We
RH> did a couple of sub outs in our meal Friday night to make it more
RH> enjoyable. I could have had a lot more of that maple-brown sugar ice
RH> cream but my blood glucose readings would have not been good. They
RH> were below 95, both the day after and 2 days after the dinner so I
RH> guess I did well keeping my carbs in line/balanced with protiens.

NB> Sounds like you could have had a little more of that ice cream... you
 NB> did well. :)

Haven't gone over 100 in over a week. I'm in the range my doctor was
trying to get me in--took stopping the insulin to hit it--for the most
part. Still have an occaisional day in the 70s or 80s, or 100s but
fairly consistent in the low 90s.

NB> RH>> At least there's an alternative. I think most places are willing
NB> to RH>> provide one if you specify the need for it. If not, then they
 NB> lose a RH>> customer.
NB> NB>> Or they have a customer that has fewer options, at least... :)

RH> Depends on the place, some I'd walk out on if they wanted to be a pain
RH> about it. We have walked out on places that were less than
RH> accomodating on smoking/non smoking areas.

NB> Not quite the same thing... back when that was an issue here, we've
NB> done the same thing... it's nice not to have to worry about that any
 NB> more. :)

Some places you still do have to watch it--last I knew, VA still allowed
smoking in restaurants. We try to sit as far away from the smoking area
as possible in situations like that. In other places, we're grateful for
the no smoking laws.

NB> RH>> Tonight we're going to use the tagine for some spicy
NB> RH>> Moroccan chicken and couscous.
 NB> NB>> That sounds tasty, too.. :)

RH> Steve got it a bit too spicy for my tastes--he added in some spices
RH> not listed and didn't measure anything. He enjoyed it but it was a bit
RH> too hot for me to really enjoy the mix of spices. He also cooked the
RH> chicken in whole pieces; I usually cut it up and coat the pieces with a
RH> mix of flour and the spices. But, he did the cooking and major clean up
 RH> so I can't complain too loud.

NB> Variety is the spice of life...? :) And it's awfully nice to have
NB> someone else to share the labors with... :)

Yes, it is nice to have him do the clean up for the heavy things. (G)
Most of the time he's a decent cook but when the heat is on his level,
then it's not enjoyable for me. Right now he's smoking some chicken leg
quarters I'll put in the crock pot later with a bbq sauce for our church
picnic tomorrow. His first smoker was a found, charcoal one with no
instructions so everything tasted like overdone smoky charcoal. That one
was in AZ; it hit the dumpster before we went to HI. There he got a gas
smoker, another one in GA and now using an electric one--all with much
better results than that charcoal smoker. (G)
