Boys and girls, can you say compost? Or don't bother to plant
them in the first place. I suppose in straitened circumstances
one might like fast-growing stuff, but I can't imagine my own
circumstances being that straitened.

Yeah, but it takes oodles of time. As I've pointed out
before, my vision issues have colored my traveling and
life style quite a bit.

My hypothesis is that it's deliberate. Anyhow, I used it as ID in
both Washington and Boston, no problem at all.

As I had lots of miles in my account, and as my friend the Dodger
e-mailed me hoping I'd show up, and as I had lunch with my friend
Alan whose reunion is coming up next year, and he was thinking of
going, I ended up going. Even with the mileage ticket, the cost
for a 2-day trip was close to $600, which I pretty well can't
justify but rather have to write it off as a silly indulgence.
Some folks seemed happy to see me, though, and I was happy to
reacquaint myself with some old friends.

Hobbit seed cake

250 g Plain Flour
1/2 ts baking powder
1 pn salt
150 g soft butter
150 g caster sugar
2 Tb milk
1 ts vanilla extract
1 1/2 Tb caraway seeds
3 lg eggs
1 1/2 Tb orange zest

Oven at 180C/350F.

Grease and line with greaseproof paper a 1 lb loaf tin.

In a bowl sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.

In a separate mixing bowl, add the sugar and butter (soft)
and cream together until they are a pale colour. Add in
the eggs one at a time and add in the vanilla extract and
orange zest ensuring it is mixed thoroughly.

Add in the dry ingredients a bit at a time and alternate
adding in the milk until all the ingredients are added.
Gently stir in the caraway seeds.

Using a spatula, spoon the mixture into the loaf tin and
bake 50 min or until cooked.

Once ready remove from the oven and leave in the tin for
a further 10 min. Remove and place on a wire rack to cool.
Serve in slices and if desired spread with butter.
