Hi Dave,

DD> Why ever would I do that? Given my loathing for snot pods.

RH> General "you" there; I know you specifically wouldn't buy it. OTOH,
RH> others in this echo might. I bought some in Savannah but after trying
RH> it, realised it would be much better made with fresh corn, tomatoes and
 RH> okra.

DD> Subtle differences in language use. If aiming at the person to whom I
DD> am replying I'll use "you can". If as a general comment I generally
 DD> use "one can". Bv)=

I could have used what's common here--"y'all" (singular) or "all y'all"
(plural) but figured not to. (G) Didn't want to confuse all y'all
Yankees too much.

DD> As to the second part - there are good reasons for the "Buy Fresh -
DD> Buy Local" posters I see in many places. Not that that will convince
DD> the Walmartians to do so. But, that may be general laziness and
 DD> clewlessness.

Our local W-M does advertise its locally obtained produce but it's not
near the amount other stores like Lowe's or Harris Teeter carry.

DD> hobo stew since a hobo could harvest it from someone's back garden and
DD> boil it up in a can back at the hobo jungle.

RH> Girl Scout hobo stew was brown some ground beef, mix in canned veggie
RH> soup and a bit of water. When money was tight at the end of a month &

DD> Boy sprout hobo stew, as well. Also YMCA camp hobo stew, etc., etc.

IOW, most any youth organisation where the kids go outdoors for some
activities all have the same basic hobo stew.

DD> was *really* a "hobo" stew. Having travelled around the country
DD> hitch-hiking and sometimes riding free in freight cars I have stayed a
DD> number of times in "hobo jungles". And there was seldom any meat to be

RH> I never did that but was in Girl Scouts for a number of years and had
RH> their version. The local Boy Scouts would wrap potatoes, carrots and a
RH> wad of ground beef in foil, then put it in the fire for a while, their
RH> version of the stew. Dad, being a scout leader, tried it on our first
RH> extended family camping trip and found it takes a lot more time to cook
RH> 7 of them than just his one. It didn't make the cut for meals on our

DD> Did he do one big packet or seven individual packets? Individual
DD> packets should cook up quicker than a gargantuan family-sized wad.
DD> Depending on the size of the "camp fire" of course.

It was done as individual packets but by the time we drove a good bit of
the day (until probably about 5 pm), set up camp, got a fire going with
a good bed of coals and then put the packets on, made for a late supper.
Dishes were done by lantern light, as it seems they were most nights on
our camping trips. Dad would want to cover as much ground as he could
before having to stop & set up the tents.

RH> future trips, nor did the Carnation Instant Breakfast and cookies for a
RH> lunch meal he tried the next year. A glass of milk with flavored powder
RH> and a couple of cookies does not fill up teens or pre teens.

DD> That would have been a non-starter from the beginning in my family.

Carnation pushed it as nutritionally equal to a bacon/eggs/toast
breakfast and it was relatively inexpensive. I think the latter reason
is why Dad wanted to try it. It may have been nutritionally equal to the
big breakfast, and easier to fix, but it did not have the "staying"
power needed to keep stomachs happy.

DD> This is a French recipe - so should you ever make it (HAH) you will
DD> want to substitute for the obligatory brandy/cognac and wine. If a

RH> Might sub out game hens for the pigeons too.

DD> And less of them than of pigeons - say 3 Cornish instead of 6 flying
 DD> rats.

Easier to catch than pigeons--or squirrels.

DD> hobo were making it the wine and hard stuff would likely go
DD> straight-away into the cook rather than into the stew.

 RH> Figured it would. (G)
