====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> Someone, several years ago, published a "learned thesis" on
DD> regionalisms and their origins. Probably was a doctoral thesis or the
DD> result of a Senator Ted Stevens style "bridge to nowhere" grant.

RH> That was, I believe, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill grad
RH> student, and only within the past couple of years. The Raleigh
RH> newspaper had an article about it at the time, Reader's Digest did a
RH> small piece within the last 2-3 months. And according to all that, I do
 RH> speak southern.

DD> Oh. OK. Someone has published something newer than the study to which
DD> I referred. I wonder if the "new" paper broke any new ground or if the
DD> Doc-candidate got away with a re-hash of someone else's work (they do
DD> that a lot, you know).

I know it's done a lot but I don't know if this was based on previous
work or not. This covered pretty much all of CONUS. I remember seeing a
b&w movie in junior high English asking a group of people (4-6) from
various regions about dialect, etc. Interesting thing--at the end, they
described a skunk and asked the panel what each of them called the
creature. They all called it a skunk.

DD> I've not noticed the statue of Liberty on the NY plates. But, the

RH> It's not on the plates any more--was, starting in 1986 but came off a
 RH> few years ago.

DD> That would explain why I've not noticed them lately. Bv)= In '86 I
DD> was driving a semi - but, I was more interested in where the little
DD> buddies (4-wheelers) were going (in relation to my truck) than where
 DD> they came from. Bv)=

RH> Don't blame you--traffic was backed up almost to DC north of Richmond
RH> with what looked like a big rig/suv accident on Friday. Big rig was
RH> jacknifed into the median ditch.

DD> We have an exit at the I-55/I-72 interchange that is very poorly
DD> designed. I've seen several tractor trailer rigs on their sides on the
DD> west-bound exit to South Sixth Street in Springfield. I also witnessed
 DD> a mugg in a high-rider four-wheel-drive pickup spin around thrice,
DD> bounce off the left hand guard rail - doing neither truck nor guard
DD> rail a world of good - and disappear down a gully on the other side of
DD> the road. IDOT has yet to do anything about it.

Doesn't sound too good for the driver there. In NJ we were in a cars
only lane (on the far left) and as we got off the turnpike & went thru
the toll, we had to turn onto a road going off to the right. Other
drivers of big rigs, other cars, etc were trying to get over to the left
for the other road. All this after dark; it was like driving in Korea!
We made it without incident.

DD> Federal Safety Yellow with the black numbers sure does make them
DD> recognisable. As are Pennsylvania's plates with the dark blue stripe
DD> on top and the bright yellow strip on the bottom.

 RH> And HI's rainbow.

DD> The ones I have seen (not many on the mainland) generally have the
DD> rainbow faded pretty badly. North Carolina's "First In Flight" plates
DD> are much more recognisable from a distance and AFAIAC more attractive
 DD> and colourful as well.

RH> We've got one of those on our Escape now. Have you noticed NC
RH> alternates between red and blue letters/numbers--one year red, next
RH> year blue, then red, etc?

DD> No, I haven't. I'll have to start looking now that you have pointed
 DD> that out.

Ours are red; we got the plates in 09. They used to issue a front plate
if you lived within a city (town, village) limits with the name of the
city but gave that up some time ago. Kinda miss it in some ways.

RH> Fish tossing would be fun to see. Just walking thru, smelling the
RH> various aromas, sampling small bites of things, etc would be a treat.

DD> Like I said, bring your walking shoes. Then, when you are done with
DD> the actual Pike Place building, go out the front door into the
DD> square/courtyard and explore the myriad specialty shops ... which are
DD> no doubt changed from my last visit over ten years ago. I scored some
DD> really dynamite spices from a small store-front vendor there and was
DD> tempted by some dishes in another - but remembered that they would be
DD> awf'ly hard to get into a carry-on for the return to Spring-A-Leak.

RH> Sit down for a bit and enjoy something non Starbucks too.

DD> There are waaaaay more coffee roasters in the Seattle area than *$.
 DD> Bv)=

I know, and I don't drink the stuff anyway. When we were in Bethlehem
(Palestinian territory), we saw one coffee shop with a sign for Stars
and Bucks but I don't think anyone in our group went for it.

Catch you later,
