Ärende: what? two burgers 382

I'd wanted to go to Peter Luger, which is said to have a wonderful
steak trimmings burger for lunch, but Lilli said we'd overspent
already at the Little Owl, and furthermore, Luger is way off in the
wilds of Brooklyn. Actually, what she offered was that we could go
there, but only if I promised to get a burger as well; which was
reading my mind, as my plan was to get a burger rare with bacon for
her and a steak-for-one rare for me, then switch plates after I'd
eaten the fatty and gristly parts. The single steak is available
all day (for $40-something) but sells well at lunch; the multiple-
serving steaks (for $40-something per diner) are the usual order at
dinnertime. The burger is available ($12-ish) only until 3:45 pm.
I didn't wish to lie or mislead, so plan B was Bill's Bar and
Burgers, one of those tv-hyped places and apparently the largest
burger restaurant in the world. Also, and this is very important,
within a half mile of the hotel.

According to CNN, its Fat Cat is one of the top 10 burgers in the
country, so I said, what the heck, why not, I'll have one rare
with cheese (comes with) and bacon (an extra $1.25). Here's what
came, between the halves of a toasted mediocre English muffin:
two thin patties that could not possibly have been cooked rare
but certainly didn't have to be as crunchy as they were, glued
together with American cheese, almost redeemed by a huge clot
of wet but tasty stewed and supposedly semi-caramelized onions.
It wasn't bad, just very In'n'Outish; if there had been one fat
rare patty instead of two 3-oz gray-brown ones, I'd have loved it.

I washed this down with a Bill's Brew (made by Six Point), rather
rich and hoppy; Lilli drank a glass of Malbec which wasn't the
Amalaya offered on the menu but rang up at $3 less, so all was ok.

Her plain burger medium-rare actually came pink in the middle,
about 6-7 oz, preformed, and on a real, fairly sturdy bun; she
said it was quite good.

I was disappointed enough with my meal that immediately I steered
us direct to Burger Heaven down the street, which gets
substantially mixed reviews on the Yelp, with comments ranging
from truly heaven to stale meat and not enough of it and
overcooked like an In-n-Out. It smelled pretty good, so in we
went; I ordered a burger rare and a Heineken from the grumpy East
European waitress. Lilli asked for wine, and the response was red
or white. Red it was, and not too shabby for that, probably some
kind of Cabernet Merlot blend from Sonoma County. Speaking of
red, my burger came out half a pound of red on a brioche bun; its
meat was full-flavored, bloody, almost livery - probably flank
and/or brisket, a lovely piece of meat. The second best burger of
the trip, not quite as good as Burger Joint's but way better than
Shake Shack's. I have long ago concluded that Yelpers tend to be
halfwits; this was corroboration.
