Chinese is mostly the buffets for us, too, now that Yang's is no more...
the main exception is dim sum at Cantonese House, which is sort of a
form of buffet except that it's carts instead of walking around the
steam tables. ;) Indian is mostly buffet, but there aren't any Thai
buffets (sometimes some Thai selections on the Asian buffets, but that's
not the same) so that is a sit-down... We don't do takeout that much,
either... except, there is a hole-in-the-wall place that does Chinese,
sushi and Thai, and I every so often stop in there for a takeout super
eel roll sushi... haven't tried their Thai yet, but have had a couple of
their Chinese selections as takeout for supper.

Yang's was a sit-down Chinese place, then later a sit-down Japanese and
Korean restaurant... We were introduced to it while we were still in
college, and patronized it for very many years... Mr. Yang said that he
went into the restaurant to put his two daughters through college...
about the time they finally finished, the place was looking a bit
shabby, but instead of retiring, he remodeled and changed it to the
Japanese/Korean. While it was still Chinese, they had a small lunch
buffet for a while during the week, added dim sum to the Sunday lunch
offerings (our first experience with congee and the various dumplings),
and started offering sushi. He kept the bar open during the remodel, so
that the weekly karaoke and darts groups could keep coming, and they
continued offering sushi and miso soup at the bar... After the remodel,
he had the full range of Japanese offerings (hibachi, sushi, tempura),
along with a teahouse side where one could sit on the floor at a proper
Japanese tea table, and a full range of Korean foods. KImchee had been
on the Chinese buffet before, now it came into its own with the full
Korean menu. It was a regular place for us to go for about 35 years,
until it closed in 2005. We still quite miss it... and our friendship
with the Yangs... CT died a couple of years ago, his wife we run into
once in a while...

DS> We'd been to Boston Market a long time ago when they were just
DS> chicken. Then we discovered BJs chicken. For $4.99 we get a fire
DS> roasted chicken weighing about three pounds. They often last us for
DS> three or four meals -- the last being something like chicken pot pie or
DS> chicken a la king using up the bits and pieces. The bones and skin go
DS> into a small crockpot to make a broth that is used for gravy the next
DS> time we get a roaster.

Of course, eating at home is usually more cost-effective... ;) My
neighbor Gwen really liked the Boston Market meatloaf and their mashed
potatoes... I could get her to eat more than she might otherwise have
eaten (in a time when she was failing to thrive) by taking her there...
I had discovered Boston Market on a trip to Philly when I couldn't find
the hole in the wall Chinese place I'd been to before (I think it had
closed since my last visit)... and then found that there were a couple
of them in the Rochester area. I was mostly getting their chicken
sandwich from the drive-thru before it became a Place to Take Gwen... ;)
