ML>> river, where Lake St. itself is not quite on the bank.
ML>> I had to look this up.
NB>> And Water St on the other side of the river, I think... Little
NB>> streets going down to the river... ;)
ML> Water Street though not being very informative.

No, but one runs out of informative names faster than one runs out of
little streets to be named... ;)

ML>> Up here that's mostly in the 'burbs, where one street
ML>> is called Woburn St. (say) when in Winchester but
ML>> Winchester St. when it's in Woburn. This makes sense
 ML>> in a horse-drawn way.
 NB>> It's the street TO...
ML> Yes, but not always. Milton St. in Milton is in Milton.
ML> Milton St. in Boston does not go to Milton; the possible
ML> explanation is that perhaps it once did, but that doesn't
ML> explain why West Milton St. in Boston is east of Milton St.
ML> in Boston. Milton St. in Cambridge never went to Milton
 ML> nor near it.

In Cambridge it's probably named for the poet... :) And I probably
should have said above that it's TO or FROM, generally... except for
when it's not.. (G) Up in the North Country, I think county road 24 is
called Russell Turnpike for its whole length, including through the town
and village of Russell... Probably depends on who named it, when, and
what they thought their reasoning was... :)

 ML>> consistently inconsistent.
NB>> That's pretty standard, at least here in the east... :)
ML> I expect inconsistently inconsistent so as not to be
ML> unpleasantly surprised. I usually get it.

Which...? Surprised...? ;) Yup... been there, too...

ML> Lake Ontario has 393.5 cu miles of water (not 393.5
ML> miles cubed, which is something altogether else, which
ML> is what I assumed earlier).

Makes a bit of difference... ;)

ML> The Genesee River is 157 mi long; if it were a mile wide
ML> and a mile deep throughout it would have 40% as much water
 ML> as Lake Ontario.
ML> dec.ny.gov claims that it averages 100 ft wide (I am guessing
ML> this means the navigable northern reaches, but let's give the
ML> benefit of the doubt) but is "relatively shallow ... making
 ML> boating difficult."
ML> So if it's a mile deep, that would make it 1/125. If it's
ML> 10 ft deep, generous considering the navigability evidence,
ML> it would be 1/66000. So a millionth might be chintzy, but
ML> a thousandth would still be enormously generous.

Part of what makes the river not too navigable is that it has a number
of falls along the way... great for setting up grist and flour mills,
not so great for getting places without regular portages.. :)

ML> I am surprised there's no easy lookup for the volume of rivers.

Makes some sense... the volume of a river changes a lot more with time
of year and rainfall or lack thereof than that of a lake (especially a
larger lake) does... Quite the difference for a river between flood
stage and drought time... even the Pond isn't that much affected,
although it can be lower or higher at times...

NB>> No, because it was the main drag down to the Lake, so it was called
NB>> Lake Avenue... Once upon a time there was a trolley line down the
NB>> middle of the road to take Rochesterians down (or up) to the Lake...
ML> More's the pity that there isn't one now. What fun that would be,
ML> to ride the trolley down to the big water.

Quite true. It was the highlight of the week, so I've read... :)
