What I meant is more than one publicized event, not more than
one instance, because I know the latter to be true.

The BSO guys are a special case - they were the prodigies and
bad boys of music but gave all that up for job security and a
certain amount of prestige, so they (especially in the freedom-
obsessed '60s and '70s) chafed at the boundaries imposed by a
regular schedule and having to play for some [s]idiot azzole[/s]
conductor every couple days, so when off duty they went and did
weird and thrilling things, such as making pornographic videos,
cooking gourmet meals, and smuggling drugs. This last had special
appeal, as musicians live hand to mouth, and back in the '70s the
starting salary was a measly $80,000 a year, hardly enough to feed
a family in Boston. Of course it was a 30 hour a week job, and one
could moonlight by teaching at a university or conservatory, do
outside gigs (which irritated us second tier players because they
clogged up the rosters and impeded our opportunities), or sell
stuff sometimes unrelated to music proper (such as narcotics).

Bitter much? No, I audition badly, and I know that, and the one
time I actually auditioned I was sent away with my tail behind my
legs - they said, and I quote, we are looking for reliability, not
personality (I also auditioned for Buffalo and was called back,
but in that short amount of time had lost interest in orchestral
music and in upstate New York).

I don't cut cuteness that kind of slack. I no feel-a you butt,
you no break-a my violin.

Don't think so. I waved my fancy credentials at the outer
guard and was waved through, bypassing a line of only 20
people or less - there was but one TSA ID checker who took
alternately from the demigod line and the peon line, but
of course only 10% of us have had our brush with immortality,
so I was through in a jif, being waved through with a "Thank
you, sir." Ticket machine to club was 5 minutes.

But when I went to the gate at boarding time, the inbound
had not shown up, and it was from a shuttle route, which is
not supposed to ever be late (they used to give something
like 5000 miles, or 20% of a free trip, if you were delayed
for any reason including weather more than the FAA mandated
15 allowable minutes. Not true any more I guess). We loaded
a bunch late, and we took off a bunch late, and though the
flight only takes half an hour, we circled a bunch, so that
was more like an hour. But this all might have been attributed
to bad weather up and down the east coast plus the general
all-around nastiness of Philadelphia, rather than understaffing
in the control towers, which I believe has been minimized by
Congressional bluster and by cleverness on the part of the
aviation administrators.

I still had enough time for my connection through Philly to
BWI so I could see the Shipps before Gail's surgery, which I
think must have happened by now.

Mango Chicken Tarkari
categories: Nepal, poultry, main
Yield: 1 batch, about 8 servings

2 lb chicken breast, cut into 1/2" slices
2 c ripe mango, diced
1 Tb cumin powder
1/2 ts turmeric
1 c onion, diced
1 Tb garlic, minced
1 Tb ginger, minced
1 Tb chili paste
1 Tb black peppercorn
4 Tb clarified butter
Salt and Pepper
1 Tb chopped cilantro for garnish

In a nonstick pan, heat 2 Tb butter. Fry black pepper for
30 sec. Add turmeric and onion and saute until translucent.
Add garlic, ginger and cumin powder; stir well for 1 min.
Put the mango chunks into the onion mixture; mix well and
saute 5 min to allow sweating of the mango. Add chili
paste, salt and pepper; stir thoroughly for the complete
incorporation of the ingredients. Allow the mango mixture
to simmer for another 10 min or so. Reduce the mixture by
half. Remove from heat and transfer to a blender for
pureeing. Puree the mango mixture into a mango sauce.

In a large bowl, season chicken pieces with salt and
pepper. In a nonstick saucepan, heat 2 Tb butter. Add
chicken mixture and brown well over medium heat for
8-10 min until the chicken pieces are almost done. To
the browned chicken add pureed mango mixture and stir
well to coat all the pieces of chicken. Lower the heat
and allow braising for 10-15 min until the chicken pieces
are tender and a desired consistency of the mango sauce
has been achieved. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve with rice and roti
(flat bread).
