As I don't anticipate returning to the Rotten Apple for anything in the
foreseeable future it's sort of moot. I might, if I had tix, time and transport
visit Lincoln Center for one the Wynton Marsalis events and an evening at
Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. But, those third world cabbies know their way around -
so, it ought to be not a hassle which way is up and which way is down.

Hot pepper enhances the palate - and inures it to the heat to some extent.
Nothing sissy about that. Except that if something is stupid hot - the heat
overwhelms any hope of tasting the flavour of the grub. Like our locally famous
"Firebrand Chilli". Of which you have had several bowls. After the third or
fourth bite I lost any hint of cumin, garlic, beef, etc. --- just the
overweening heat.

Fair enough - when I was last in the Rotten Apple (other than a single trip in
a semi) the tubes and their routes were titled separately. So, the only MTA I
had in my memory banks was the on of the Kingston Trio song. And Charlie's wife
did feed him, so she probably didn't want to get rid of him - maybe just have a
vacation for a bit. But, she could have given him, maybe, a Thermos of soup to
go with the Subway Sandwich.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Stracciatella - Italian Egg Drop Soup
 Categories: Poultry, Greens, Cheese, Eggs
      Yield: 2 servings

      4 c  Chicken stock; lightly
           - salted
      1 lg Egg
      4 ts Fine grated, lightly packed
           - Parmesan cheese *
      1 tb Panko breadcrumbs; toasted
           - for added flavour (opt)
        pn Fresh ground black pepper
           Handful of spinach leaves;
           - in 1/2" ribbons (can also
           - use chard, arugula, sorrel
           - or any tender green)

  Place stock in a 2-quart saucepan and bring to a simmer.

  In a medium bowl whisk together the egg, Parmesan cheese,
  breadcrumbs (if using), and black pepper.

  Once the stock is simmering, stir in the sliced spinach.

  Pour/scrape the cheese egg mixture into the simmering
  stock, do not stir. After a few seconds, stir the egg
  mixture into the soup. Cook at a gentle simmer for another
  minute. Taste the soup and add more salt and pepper if you
  wish.

  Serve immediately.

  * if you have coarsely grated Parm, grind it up to a
  finer consistency in a food processor
