I saw that on that menu that offered smoked duck the other day
and got the duck so as not to offend Lilli's aesthetic
sensibilities. The duck was superb.

Now they're suggesting that there should be a category 6, and
Haiyan should be in it. Sustained winds of 195 at landfall
(22 more than Katrina and about the same as Camille) and gusts
of 235. That's way into cat 5 and also higher than the original
Philippine government estimates. An ugly situation - the
government estimates over 2000 deaths, but others claim up to
10 times that.

If we'd flown through one day earlier we would have had a bumpy
time of it, but as it was, it was an easy transit over the
remains of the storm. In my relatively lucky life I've been
near some major disasters but never seriously affected by any.

Kardillong Isda - Sauteed Fish with Egg
cat: main
serves: 4 to 6

1 1/2 ts salt
1 1/2 Tb lemon juice
2 lb fish, whole or sliced into quarters
- or any 1 1/2-lb fish fillet
1/2 c flour (optional)
1 c cooking oil
2 cl garlic, crushed
1/4 c sliced onion
3/4 c diced ripe tomato
1/2 c water
salt and pepper to taste
2 eggs, slightly beaten

Sprinkle salt and lemon juice on fish. Fry in oil until brown.
(When using fillets, shake each fillet in a sm plastic bag with
1/2 c flour before frying.) Use 2 Tb of oil for frying if fish
is not floured; 3 Tb if it is. Set aside. In 3 Tb hot oil saute
garlic until brown; add onion and tomato. Cook until onion is
transparent and tomato is soft. Add fried fish and water.
Simmer for 5 min. Season with salt and pepper. Add slightly
beaten eggs. Simmer for another 2 min. Serve hot.
