I don't think there were any initial complete meal write offs, just a
part of a couple I can specifically remember. Once in AZ tho, I made one
that none of us could finish--used up a bottle of assorted powdered
chilis in the sloppy joe mix. It was too hot, even for Steve. I also
made a dud when we were at Fort Devens but Steve also did the pumpkin
stew there that went over like a lead ballon.

His mom was a plain cook; for example, spaghetti was basically an
unknown for them. My paternal grandfather was a manual laborer so wanted
(and got) plain, filling (unimaginative) meals. Dad had to do some of
the cooking in his teens so learned how to cook plain. If my grandmother
had been more creative in her cooking, Dad would have learned to enjoy
different things but since she wasn't, I had to eat what Dad liked while
I lived at home.

I've made similar, and enjoyed it. I was introduced to this while in
college by a set of twins in my dorm when their family came to visit and
brought a huge pot of it.
