The new and improved store has both advantages and disadvantages ...

This week I found, for the first time, bought and enjoyed purple
fleshed potatoes.

The Asian section is twice as big as it was before with lots of
variety and I came across something Carol the Shank spoke fondly
of: Filipino Datu Puti brand Toyomansi Calamansi (soy sauce with
sour orange juice). It tastes pretty much as you would expect it to.

Not everything Glen introduced was a huge success. The expanded
cheese counter had all kinds of fancy imported cheeses at pretty
steep prices ($39 to $69 per kg). Except for a small piece of
Limburger I had avoided that section of the store for budget
reasons. The only things that turned out to be popular were the
extra sharp 3 year old Cheddar, Romano and Gruyere. But Glen cleared
out all the slow movers at 50% off so I dabbled and picked up some
small packages of: Limburger, Oka, peppered Epoisses de Bourgogne,
sage Derby, Stilton, Alsatian Muenster and a French triple cream.
This will probably be a once in a lifetime purchase as there is no
way I would ever spend $69/kg for cheese, no matter how good it is.

But a lot of low cost, low markup, bulky items are now gone. There
are no more 20 lb bags of potatoes at 49 cents a pound, just 10 lbs
at 69 cents, no 10 lb bags of onions at 49 cents, just 3 lb bags at
69 cents and no commodity bulk bins at all. I do miss them.

      Title: Cheesecake With Chocolate Chips
 Categories: Low-fat, Cheesecakes, Chocolate, Holiday
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
    2/3 c  Crushed cookies
     16 oz Neufchatel cream cheese
    2/3 c  Nonfat sour cream
    2/3 c  Chocolate chips
      2 ts Vanilla extract
    1/8 c  Cocoa powder
      2    Egg whites
    1/2 c  Brown sugar
    1/2 c  Sugar
 
  Crush cookies to make about 2/3 cup. (I used Peek Frean-Nice)
  Sprinkle on bottom of regular cake pan.
  
  Melt chocolate over double boiler, or for 1 and 1/2 to 2 minutes,
  in microwave, turning every fifteen seconds, and checking as to
  not burning them. Add one egg white at a time, beating with
  electric mixer as soon as they are added until smooth. Then add
  the vanilla and sour cream, and beat until smooth. Add cream
  cheese, cocoa, and sugars and beat until smooth. Put the cheese
  mixture over the crumbs, and bake at 400 degree's for 15 minutes,
  then turn oven down to 240 and bake for approximately 45 more
  minutes, until just set. If it is baked too long, it could become
  dry. Chill for 2 hours. To serve, you may like chocolate curls on
  top, or little chocolates.
  
  I know it is not really that low fat, but it is lower fat than the
  traditional cheesecake. It's worth it for Valentine's.
  
  Per serving: 194 Calories (kcal); 5.75g Total Fat; (24% calories
  from fat); 3.4g Protein; 36g Carbohydrate; 2.1mg Cholesterol; 34mg
