I think I'm getting Raynaud's - anyhow, I went out to
shovel this morning (6 in of heavy wet stuff) and even
with a bit of exertion my fingers and toes got stiff,
cold, and bluish. But I figured that as the car had to
get unblocked I might as well contribute to the effort.

The snow had iced over badly, and I had to use a coal
shovel to break through in spots, especially where the
highway department had so thoughtfully built a foot-plus
barrier across the drive.

I got mighty tired mighty early, but I thought a sixty-
something heart patient would do better than an almost
seventy-year-old arthritic and his cancer-ridden wife,
but they joined me a bit later and we made a major dent
before breaking for lunch.

Progresso minestrone, pleasant if a bit untasty. I
reached for the cayenne to jazz it up, and my cold
fingers dropped it making a mess that included a teaspoon
in my bowl of soup and another half teaspoon or so on the
tablecloth, which I scooped up and put into the bowl. The
soup was hot enough, perhaps a little too much.

We had hummus to go with:

Sabra with olive tapenade - a pretty good spread, moderately
blended, bits of olive adding some textural and flavor
interest. Everyone liked this better, even Ruth, who can't
stand olives. I'd have liked more cumin and garlic, though. B

Cedars, zesty lemon flavor - nasty furniture polish aroma,
thanks to lemon oil and a flavor reminiscent of hard candy.
Much smoother than the other, also more sesame, which would
have been nice but for the dominance of the lemon flavoring.
Do not buy! D

Near East pita - a standard, but quite soft, almost too
soft to scoop up the hummus. B

Just now the youngsters (the daughter and son-in-law, both
mid-20s) have come back from being stranded out in the
boonies; they had promised to do the shoveling, and they are
making good, though most of it has already been done.

Concert tonight, but my fingers are beginning to split a
little; my couple of tiny little solos will have a bit more
blood, sweat, and/or tears than usual.

      Title: Hummus (Live!)
 Categories: Dips, Spreads, Classic, Live!
      Yield: 2 Cups

      1 cl Garlic
    1/4 c  Tahini (sesame paste)
           Available in most major
           Stupormarkups or specialty
           Food stores
    1/4 c  Fresh lemon juice
      2 c  Canned chickpeas, drained
           And rinsed
    1/2 c  Water
    1/4 ts Ground cumin, or to taste
    1/4 ts Cayenne, or to taste
           Salt
           Extra-virgin olive oil
           Lemon wedges
           Grilled pita triangles

  In a food processor or blender combine the garlic clove,
  tahini, and lemon juice and process until the mixture
  "whitens." Add the chickpeas and process until smooth. Add
  water, a little at a time, to achieve desired consistency. Add
  the cumin, cayenne and salt and process. Taste and adjust
  seasoning if necessary.  Transfer dip to a serving bowl, smooth
  top and drizzle with olive oil. Serve with lemon wedges and pita.

  Yield: about 2 cups dip
