Ärende: Soft Margarine
======================
MICHAEL LOO Said to DAVE DRUM about Soft Margarine 637

ML> DD> Experience taught me long ago that most "soft" or "spreadable"
ML> DD> margarines contain as much water as Wal-Mart beef. Possibly
ML> DD> more.

ML> And thus a poor choice for real cooking. There were
ML> whipped ones that weren't too horrible, but in general
ML> I didn't know about that kind of thing, being a pure
ML> sort. (Kid: "Ugh, that smells like marijuana." Dad: "How
ML> would you know?")

Answer: "Remember that Grateful Dead concert you made me go to with
you?"

ML> DD> No doubt, along with a number of risque parodies. Everything
ML> DD> else seems to have been treated thus - from the Budweiser
ML> DD> frogs to old John Wayne commercials advertising Camel
ML> DD> cigarettes.

ML> But there was this article recently that claims that 80% of
ML> the raw data for scientific papers in the last decade or two
ML> are gone because of poor archiving procedures. I wonder about
ML> the old TV shows and commercials - whether they've all been
ML> digitized properly or if the films and tapes have been allowed
ML> to go the way of all flesh.

There have been a number of infamous cases of overzealous bean counters
requiring the re-use of betamax tapes to record fresh material, thus
losing archival copies of classic tube material. I understand that at
least one of the "efficiency experts" being requested to go get a job at
a landfill ... making lunch.

The older shows (from the days of the kinescope) used actual film rather
than tape and were mostly preserved. But, once the onset of magnetic
media happened ........ Katie, bar the gate! NBC, CBS and Auntie Beeb
have all been guilty of consigning eminently classic materials to the
bit bucket via erasure and reuse of the tapes on which they were stored.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Lunch-box Brisket Burritos
Categories: Beef, Breads, Chilies, Cheese, Mushrooms
      Yield: 2 servings

      4 (12") flour tortillas
8 sl Cooked brisket; in strips
      1 ts Mexican seasoning blend
        sm Mushrooms; sliced thin
      2 Pickled jalape+os; sliced
           Cheddar cheese; shredded
           Monterey jack; shredded
8 oz Can plain tomato sauce
           Add'l cheese; for tops (opt)

MMMMM------------------------GARNISHES------------------------------
           Scallions; sliced
           Pickled garlic; sliced
           Salsa or Pico di Gallo

Sprinkle Mexican seasoning on brisket slices and rub in.

Place brisket in a preheated nonstick skillet and heat for
a couple of minutes. Add the mushrooms, or any other
vegetable plus the slices of pickled jalapeno. Take off
heat. Put on tortilla (towards the top) and put more
jalapeno slices, your choice of additional items and the
cheese. Fold the sides and then roll it up. Spread 1-8 oz
can of tomato sauce over top. Sprinkle with cheese, if
desired. Place in preheated 350oF/175oC oven for 10
  minutes to melt cheese.

Serve with refried beans, corn bread, yellow rice, or any
  other side you like.

Suggested Wine: A very cold Mexican beer

NOTES: I got the idea for this while going through a zip
file I had downloaded. Someone had made burritos with
leftover smoked brisket. I had leftover brisket from the
holidays and didn't know what to do with it. I also had a
jar of pickled jalape+os I have had in the refrigerator
for a long time and had no idea what to do with. Great
  combination. Yummy!
