We came back from the trip Jan 7 to -43 C temps and frozen water
lines right down to the underground main because we had had a 4 hour
power outage back on Dec 29. The steam truck guy made it here by Jan
9; he had been going round the clock with over 100 call outs
simultaneously. We survived with 5 gallon jerry cans of water to
make coffee, showers at my BIL's and public restrooms. Such is life
in the arctic.

We get frost down as far as 12' deep here and the municipal water
and sewer lines are buried 15' down. My home in on a rock outcrop
and has no basement. The foundation is a row of steel piles set into
the rock and rising about 4' feet above ground; my floor is heavily
insulated as you can imagine.  This is a typical northern set-up.

So, my water service line is always at risk of freezing between the
bottom of the house and the ground as well as in the shallow part of
the ground unless it is wrapped with electrical "heat trace" wire OR
I have two lines, one regular one for water coming in plus a second
return line. The twin line system has an electrically powered
circulating pump to keep the water moving around quickly. Either way
I can`t tolerate a long power outage.

I did have a UPS system rated for 2 hours but the outage was 4 hours
long so I got caught as did about 200 other people. We have three
steamers and they need about 2-4 hours to thaw a line from the house
to the main. So it took 9 days working 24 hours a day to get
everyone up and running. The "steamer' is actually a truck mounted
heater generating VERY hot water and a long skinny hose.

I have a forced air furnace which worked fine as soon as the power
came back on in four hours. The interior water lines were also
frozen by then but they thawed out within an hour after the heat
came back on, with no damage (this time).

      Title: Frozen Yogurt with Fresh Cherries
 Categories: Ice cream, Fruit, British, Low-fat
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1 kg Diet Yogurt
    100 ml Skimmed Milk
     25 g  Caster sugar
     10 ml Vanilla essence
    200 g  Fresh cherries; halved
           -(stoned weight)
 
  Combine the yogurt, milk, sugar and vanilla essence in a bowl.
  Pour into an ice cream maker and follow the machine instructions,
  adding the cherries near the end of the process. Serve straight
  from machine.
  
  Alternatively, cover and place in the freezer, set to quick
  freeze, for about 2 hours.
  
  Remove the frozen yogurt from the freezer and stir vigorously to
  break up the ice particles. Add the cherries to the mixture.
  Return to the freezer until frozen.
  
  Variation: Replace 200g (7oz) yogurt with 100g (31/2oz) mascarpone
  cheese and stir in 8 Waitrose Mini Florentine Biscuits, crushed,
  with the cherries.
  
  Hints and Tips: To make the yogurt easier to serve, place in the
  refrigerator for about 10 minutes to soften before serving. This
  dessert will keep in the freezer for 2 weeks.
