A bad example for me, as I never found Shelley Winters
appealing in any way.

At my dorm we used to have to do bells duty a few hours a
week - you had to sit in the front alcove to answer the
phone or the door, a cooperative duty in place of a paid
servant. This was before every room had a phone and was
I believe mostly a girls'-dorm custom; ours had until
recently been a girls' dorm, but as they did things those
days, it was all one or all the other, and the place went
from male presence forbidden to required in the space of
a semester. Mary Bunting had a bit of Aspy's about her.
I was put there in I believe the second semester of the
bold new coeducational experiment. Anyhow, I was sitting
bells, generally about as interesting as sitting shiva,
and the phone rang.

 Where's my ******* daughter? said a nasty drunken voice.

 Who are you?

 This is Shelley Winters. Where's my ******* DAUGHTER?

 I don't know who you are or who your daughter is.

 ****!

I flagged down somebody and discovered Tory Gassman was
Shelley Winters's daughter; later on I discovered who
Shelley Winters was, so I went to see that movie where
she gets murdered by Robert Mitchum, just because.

I never had to do bells again, and a few weeks later the
entire system was dismantled forever.

And for Tory's coming-out (old-style usage) party they
chartered a plane and took much of the dorm to Italy.
I wasn't invited.

1 lg rabbit, cut up
water
vinegar or dry wine
1 onion, sliced
1 Tb salt
1 ts pepper
12 cloves
2 bay leaves
4 Tb oil
4 Tb butter
1 c sour cream

Cover rabbit with a mixture of half water and
half vinegar or dry wine. Add onion and spices.
Marinate for 2 days, turning meat at least once.

Drain and dry meat. Brown well in oil and butter.
Strain liquid and add to the meat (you may not
need all the liquid). Simmer 30 min or until
tender. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream.

Serve over noodles or rice.
