==================
Baseball season is over, nothing to gab about;
this is my latest filler ...

Here are a few quotes as chortled over by some
sportswriter. I have this feeling that the writer
misses the point a lot, though in one or two
cases I might be reading too much into the star's
mind. But they tend to remind me of when Oprah
tried to take down Sly Stallone, whose macho focus
and (in many ways) reactionary attitudes must have
rankled with her; he ran little tight circles around
her, in the parts of that interview I saw. He didn't
do much to convince me of the the merit of his views,
but of his actual cleverness there is no doubt.

trutv.com/dumb_as_a_blog/gallery/10-dumbest-athlete-quotes-of-all-time.html

Because there are no fours." -- Former professional basketball
forward Antoine Walker, on why he shoots so many threes.

There is no way this is a dumb quote, in or out of context.
It's not hugely witty, but it encapsulates his attitude in
the same way as does George Mallory's "Because it's there."

Therapy can be a good thing; it can be therapeutic."
-- Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez on the benefits
  of seeing a therapist.

Not a tautology. Cound be a statement of fact; could be
a witticism; could have deeper meanings, too."

It's permanent, for now." --San Francisco Giants'
Roberto Kelly, announcing his new name would be "Bobby."

Definitely an accurate assessment of what counts as permanency
in this fickle world. Intentional or unintentional, only his
hairdresser knows for sure.

The game was closer than the score indicated." --Former
Major League Baseball pitcher Dizzy Dean, after a 1-0 game.

There are baseball games that hinge on an inch or less
out of ninety feet, with everything else pretty equal.
That's about 4/1000 of a second. That's close. There are
also 1-0 games where one team consistently outplays the
other and is clearly better. The usual 1-0 game is between
these, close but not absurdly so. It's not clear to me
whether Dean was thinking like this consciously or
unconsciously, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Ninety percent of the game is half mental." --former
  professional baseball player, Jim Wohlford

This is definitely kind of clever and can be interpreted a
bunch of ways, only one of which implies self-contradiction.
Another thing Wohlford said that is sometimes a subject of
derision, but which I think is kind of witty, was "The only
difference between Candlestick Park and San Quentin is that
they let you out of Candlestick at night." By the way, I
was always told that the mental quote was from Yogi Berra.
