Ärende: Asparagus
=================
Hi Ruth,

-> I saw some canned white asparagus in Lowe's the other day, thought
-> "should I?", then decided "no, taste wouldn't be what I wanted" so left
-> it on the shelf. Did grab a can of bean salad as making it from scratch
-> makes a lot more than 2 people can reasonably eat.

RH> They have it in a local supermarket, even in the salad bar sometimes.
 RH> I get a little once in a while.

I don't buy the salad bar at supermarkets with the exception if we're
getting lunch at some place like Whole Foods but yes, I've seen the bean
salad there. I've also seen it on salad bars at restaurants.

-> RH> They also call the drugs you're "holding" a stash, so I'm holding a
-> RH> lot of weight in fabric.

-> I've got some, but trying to get it sewn down before we have to move
-> again. If I don't, we'll have to pay for moving it.

RH> I'm eating my way through my stash one quilt at a time. That doesn't
RH> mean more fabric doesn't creep in occasionally. I just try to make it
 RH> leave!

It has to age some before it's sewn, some ages longer than others. The
seersucker I'm making a couple of shirts out of, I bought last summer.
The red muslin I bought last week will be made into a shirt, probably in
a week or so. Other fabric I've had longer, some, lots longer.

-> RH> I made a few scrap quilts recently out of almost nothing but scrap.

-> I've several other quilts to make besides the QoV projects but have
-> fabric committed for them.

RH> I have fabric with no particular aim in mind, or at least no
 RH> recipient.

Most of my yardage is somewhat designated, the scrap (not scrap once
it's cut up) is not.

-> Just have to get the rhubarb to try it.

RH> Got a friend with a garden? Someone dumped a batch off at the local
RH> senior center this spring, free to good home. I snagged a healthy
RH> pound and brought it home to Mom, who promptly ate it. She cooked
 it first however.

I saw some into Lowe's but didn't pick it up. If they still have some
this week end, I might do so then.

-> Yes, paid is good. Getting useable parts is good too. That's why I
-> scavange buttons, zippers, etc before tossing clothes, backpacks, etc
-> that are absolutely no good otherwise.

RH> Nothing unusual there. I was raised by Depression babies, one of whom
 RH> had a
RH> farm kid for a mother. I don't scavenge zippers any more, the plastic
RH> ones aren't worth the effort, but will sometimes snag the buttons.
RH> I've bought vintage clothes for the buttons before now. The clothing
RH> might be horrible, but in a few cases the buttons have been great.
 RH> One prime example was
 RH> green
RH> and yellow poly doubleknit nastiness with gorgeous black glass
RH> buttons. The buttons were removed and the shirt tossed. I'd have burnt
RH> it, but that fabric just melts.

Melts and smells terrible. I've not bought anything just for buttons
but have planned (and made) garments around buttons. Most of the zippers
I save are the metal ones; I've a friend in Savannah who sews for a
theater group there. They prefer metal zippers because they're sturdier
for quick costume changes.

Catch you later,
Ruth
