I had such an experience once, in 1974 or 1975! Been more or
less off caffeine since, though there are days when I cannot
concentrate any more without a Coke.

No doubt they will be. The only things that I don't have
replacement for are the aspirin and some emergency melatonin
(in case of severe insomnia - the problem being that it may
work, but even in the tiniest doses can make me feel odd for
a day or two afterwards), and they are easily procurable at
my next destinations, which are New England for concerts.
Speaking of which, I have 2 days to become refamiliarized
with the violin.

The problem for me is that my trips can be substantially
extensible, so I should by now have learned to pack a
surplus of medication, and sometimes I do, when I'm
being sensible.

Just enough to give your brain a tiny tweak but not
enough to make you go, hm, that requires a thought,
which I am not prepared to give.

I really never figured that out, but it saved the Musical
Heritage Society and hundreds of obscure works whose
recording was funded by Mr. Pachelbel and Mr. Paillard.

Beef Paillard

Serves: 4

1 lb beef tenderloin, trimmed
Vegetable oil
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Place tenderloin in the freezer for 2 hr.

Preheat the oven to 200F.

Remove the tenderloin from the freezer. Using an
electric knife, cut the beef into 3/8" slices. Place
slices of beef, 1 at a time, between 2 pieces of
plastic wrap. Squirt the beef lightly with water
and squirt the top of the plastic wrap as well. Pound
to no less than 1/8" thickness. Lightly brush each
slice of beef on both sides with vegetable oil and
season with salt and pepper on both sides. Set aside.

Heat a large cast iron skillet over high heat for 3-4
min. Reduce heat to medium and turn skillet upside down
over burner. Brush the pan lightly with oil. Place 2 to
3 slices of beef on the pan at a time and sear 10 sec
on each side. Remove to an ovenproof platter and keep
in warm oven. Repeat until all of the beef has been
cooked. Serve immediately.
