Ärende: putting up
==================
Hi Nancy,

RH> freezer & pulling out only what is needed. That's only since I've left
RH> home. They also used to stop at "Bread Alone" sometimes when they went
RH> to Kingston--look them up--and got some really good breads there. We
RH> stop there from time to time as well. (G)

NB> I remember you talking about that store... :) In their later years

The storefront/cafe isn't very big but there's always quite a selection
of bread and rolls. We can also get a limited selection at the Fresh
Town store in Margaretville; if we aren't heading down toward Kingston,
it's the better alternative. Trouble is, can't keep it fresh until we
get back to NC unless we go directly home.

NB> of shopping, my parents mostly bought Ezekial bread at Lori's... I
 NB> think
NB> its available now at Wegmans, too... Now my sister does the shopping
NB> for Mommy, still gets at least multigrain or whole wheat breads for
 NB> her...

We always have to buy whole wheat or multi grain breads when we go up to
NY--and sometimes can get my folks to have a piece or two. (G)

NB> NB>> live frugally... so that Daddy's income would stretch to cover
NB> the NB>> essentials, including Christian school...

RH> There was no Christian school anywhere near us so we went to public
 RH> schools.

NB> None near us when I started school, but there was for 3 of the years
NB> in MS, and all the time in PA... When we moved here, the Christian
NB> school only went to 8th grade, so I went to the public high school for
 NB> my
NB> senior year... Later there was one thru high school so some of my
NB> younger siblings ended up there...

We've got friends that have sent their kids from pre school on. Their
oldest graduated this past May. Helps, that the mom is a teacher there.

RH> Mom and Dad penny pinched--one year Dad gave Mom a bean pot
RH> for a Christmas present so they decided the first Sunday of every
RH> month, beans would be the supper meal. Some years later, my grandmother
RH> gave us an ice cream maker so home made ice cream (mostly vanilla) was
RH> added to the bean meal. I don't know when they stopped doing that but I
RH> think it was some time while I was in college.

NB> That sounds more like tradition than penny pinching.... ;)

It was initiated as a penny pinching move.

NB> NB>> We were expected to eat what was served out... Daddy, if he knew
NB> of NB>> particular likes/dislikes, might make adjustments
NB> accordingly, but NB>> otherwise that was what you got... Usually the
NB> veggies and rice or NB>> potatoes would get completely divvied up...
NB> a roast would likely go NB>> for another one or two meals.. you got
 NB> one small slice usually...

RH> Sounds similar--meat to last more than one meal, potatoes and veggie
RH> for that meal. Dad doesn't like rice (except rice pudding) so it was
RH> rarely used as the starch.

NB> I'm not sure exactly why, but our starch was usually rice, except for
 NB> in stew... probably cheaper...

Probably a matter of whichever your parents preferred. Dad was raised on
potatoes and would rather have them than rice, any day. He'll tolerate
rice if we get Chinese food but given any choice, would go for potatoes.

NB> NB>> Sounds pretty good... and like you could have saved yourself
NB> some NB>> effort by just bringing copies with you to begin with...
 NB> :)

RH> Should have, but didn't realise it would be so well liked.

NB> Ya just never know... ;)

I know, the recipe came from a cook book Burt Ford gave me. I tweaked it
some but that's normal for me.

NB> RH>> with tossed salad and the lemon pound cake (made with half
NB> sugar, half RH>> stevia for baking). Only a couple of slices of that
 NB> came home. (G) NB>> Is one surprised...? (G)

RH> No, that's why I call it the "Vanishing Lemon Pound Cake". (G)

 NB> Indeed. :)

I'll have to make one some time when I know we'll be seeing you. (G)

NB> NB>>> For other things, there's remembering Who is really in
 NB> NB>>> control... ;)
NB> RH>> Yes, and taking things as they come, one day at a time.
NB> NB>> Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof... :) Much better
NB> not to NB>> worry ahead of time for things that haven't arrived
 NB> yet... :)

RH> And be glad you don't have foresight.

NB> In most cases, yes... :)

Just about all the time, I don't want to know what's ahead of me.

Catch you later,
Ruth
