Mine were 2nd hand skates. I didn't have the strongest ankles but I
could wobble around a bit on skates. Did a whole lot better on roller
skates tho. Our town, for years, had free roller skating nights on
Wednesdays in the school gym so I learned early on. Good training for
ice skating and even some related to skiing.

My parents started short overnight camping trips when I was about 10
years old. First extended trip came a couple of years later. Originally
we had tents with no floors but after hitting a major gulley washer of a
storm one year, they invested in tents with floors. Originally, a lot of
supper meals were based on what Dad taught the boy Scout troops but then
sort of devolved into what Mom could do on the 3 burner white gas stove.
Not gourmet by any means. Lunches were usually sandwiches, with the
exception of the ill fated Instant Breakfast experiment one year.
Breakfast was always cold cereal, same as we had at home in the summer
but Mom and Dad bought the 18 count variety packs so we could have
something different--if a sibling didn't grab what you wanted, first.
