====================================================================
Hi Dave,

RH> DD> Minor's (indeed, most things) can be bought from Amazon - if

RH> I've never looked for it there, but again, not really into food
RH> shopping thru them either.

DD> Well, I don't buy much in the food line from them. But, I do buy other
DD> things that I have trouble finding locally - enough that if I need to
DD> get past the threshold for free shipping I can order some Minor's or
DD> an "exotic" (to the local market) spice/herb/condiment like clam,
DD> shrimp or lobster base. Or for those (very) rare times when I need a
 DD> vegetable
DD> base and Swanson's Vegetable Broth or Stock won't do what I want.
DD> (yikes that was a long interjection)

Something to consider as Steve orders quite often thru Amazon. He's a
Prime member.

RH> DD> over $25 in merch (easy to do with a bit of planning given the
RH> DD> wide variety of things available) shipping is free and you
RH> DD> don't get whacked for sales tax unless Amazon has a brick &
RH> DD> mortar facility in your state.

RH> Sigh! They're now charging sales tax in NC (as of Feb. 1) and
RH> planning a brick & mortar facility in the state.

DD> That's a trade-off, no doubt. North Carolina can certainly use the
DD> jobs since all the lint-head work moved (mostly) to South Asia and
DD> Africa. And the corporate taxes will help the state's budget. But,
some individual purchasers will probably object.

Just means we pay taxes when we buy instead of yearly on our income tax
form.

DD> We (Illinois) tried to whack them to collect sales tax on internet
DD> sales - citing "agents" located in-state and/or public internet
 DD> terminals at
DD> tax-supported libraries as the rationale. Three different judges (2
DD> state, 1 federal) tossed that idea onto its ear.

We are supposed to (and we do) pay a use tax on on line and out of state
purchases. IIRC tho, we can deduct the amount paid in out of state taxes
if we do buy it in the other state, not on line, from what we owe. Steve
could fill you in on the exacts tho; he's the one that does our taxes.

DD> OTOH - Tiger Direct has a warehouse and shipping point in Chicago. So,
DD> I get whacked 6.25% state sales tax. But, I also get overnight UPS
DD> delivery from them without paying extra for special service. Bv)=

We've got a brick & mortar Tiger Direct store down in Raleigh--Steve has
given it a fair amount of business over the years we've been here.

RH> DD> I also use the white grinder for herbs, etc. as I do not mind a
RH> DD> whiff of chile in anything I am fixing ... except coffee.

RH> Steve has a separate coffee grinder. Any time we use the herb/spice
RH> one, I give it a good brush out when I'l done so we don't have too
RH> much carry over.

 DD> Here's a trick I picked up from the chile-heads - make a small batch
DD> of fresh bread crumbs in your R2-D2 grinder and it will clean any
DD> chile/herb residue right out. If you don't want to use the bread
DD> crumbs in something you are making -- the chickadees are always
 DD> hungry. Bv)=

Something to think about. I save my crusts, dice them up & dry them,
then run them thru the blender for crumbs. Don't usually have the need
for fresh crumbs but will keep that tip in mind if I do.

RH> DD> I have my last squeezer of Ultrabrite (can't find a re-supply
RH> DD> around here) in the travel bag and a nice toothbrush in its
RH> DD> plastic tube. And a 4 oz bottle of Nizoral shampoo. I never
RH> DD> liked the hotel/motel shampoos.

RH> I'll refill the small bottles sometimes with supply from home. Kinda
RH> hard to do with toothpaste tho--and I don't remember the last time I
RH> saw Ultrabrite was. Then too, I've not looked for it in over 30
RH> years.

 DD> I don't see it locally either - and it's a Colgate product. I thought
DD> it had gone the way of Ipana (Bucky Beaver's "Brusha-brusha") or
DD> Pepsodent (You'll wonder where the yellow went). I find that Pepsodent
 DD> is now
DD> owned by Church & Dwight (Arm & Hammer) and both it and Ultrabrite can
DD> be had from Amazon - I'm nearly out of Crest - so my next fill-in on
DD> an Amazon order might be toothpaste instead of soup base. No hope for
 DD> the
DD> Ipana (which I never liked) it exists only as old commercials on
 DD> U-Toob.

I never used to like Crest (or the A&P version that my parents got to
save money). Changed my mind on it over the years when I couldn't get
Colgate sometimes at the PX or commissary in Germany. Now I alternate,
using Sensodine in the morning and Crest or Colgate for sensitive teeth
in the evening per my dentist's recommendation.

RH> DD> If the farmers don't offer it they can likely point you to
RH> DD> someone or somewhere which does offer leaf lard for rendering.
RH> DD> Is there a pork processor near to you. I have the big Cargill
RH> DD> plant in Beardstown where I can score all manner of pork
RH> DD> products .... and which keeps the price
RH> DD> of pork at the stupormarkups down to a reasonable level in this
RH> DD> area.

RH> Got some fatback yesterday, will try rendering it in the (baby)
RH> crock pot tomorrow.

DD> Good luck. Rendered leaf lard is the preferred lard for pastry - but,
DD> lard can be rendered from fatback/salt pork. Sort of like kidney suet
DD> is the preferred beef fat - but any beef fat can be rendered.

It worked--not the whitest but got lard. Now to make some pies and/or
biscuits!
