=================
Hi Michael,

RH> Got your days and nights mixed up? Hopefully you had breakfast

ML> I often do, and aside from some acute anxieties that come
ML> with sleep deprivation, there aren't any obvious bad effects.

As long as you don't miss any flight--that's the important factor.

RH> included in the cost of your night's stay, even if it was probably not
RH> what you wanted to eat.

ML> I prefer not to have to pay for other people's breakfasts,
ML> so included is not advantageous for me; but when traveling
ML> with Lilli I often go for it, as she likes breakfast. Also,
ML> when I go with the Hilton or Marriott chains, it's always
ML> free owing to my status; Lilli has top tier on Starwood,
ML> so we get it there too.

Some can be good, others, are easily forgettable.

RH> For some reason I don't sleep on planes and not that often in cars. I

ML> For many, motion and sleep don't go together well (that
ML> aside from gentle rocking, which puts most people down).

RH> did sleep (somewhat) on the duty train between Frankfurt & Berlin most
RH> times I took it, but not every time.

ML> The rhythms of the train are more conducive to sleep, but
ML> if you're not inclined or practiced to sleep in conveyances,
 ML> there's no helping.

I think the one time I rode the duty train, the coupler for the car was
right under my bed. Felt that way anyway.

RH> Constantly changing shifts are no fun, especially if you want to have
RH> some sort of normal semblence to family life. A steady shift, if it's
RH> days, swings, or mids, is much better in that regard.
ML> So why isn't society oriented more in this way?
RH> School kids--got to get them in school during the day so they can do
RH> sports and other things after school.

ML> It's clear that most people of that age group would want to
ML> have their schedules coordinate with school-age kids, but
ML> that doesn't explain why so many systems have employees
ML> switch among shifts, to the detriment of their health and
ML> work efficiency. Also, there's a significant workforce of
ML> single people and empty-nesters who could be apportioned
ML> between second and third shift.

Some people like them, others don't. They're good for night owls but not
so good for those who function better in the (normal) early morning
times.

ML> Balmain bugs are a kind of slipper lobster, which look
ML> kind of like enormous pillbugs. I think they're pretty
ML> disgusting in appearance and taste only okay compared
 ML> to real lobsters.
RH> OK, but still edible? Sounds like a poor man's lobster.

ML> There are recipes for them. OK, I admit that doesn't mean
ML> they're edible, but in this case, I can attest to the fact
ML> that they are. There are two main Australian bugs, Balmain
ML> and Moreton Bay. One tends towards mushiness, the other
ML> firmer, I forget which, but I seem to recall Moreton Bay is
ML> considered better. And they're not really a poor man's
ML> lobster, as the firmer variety can be very expensive, even
ML> more so than our lobsters.

IOW, out of our budget for the time being.

ML> After I finish posting my 9/11/13 trip, which I'm just
ML> getting around to, yeah. Three semi-notable meals, which
 ML> I've mentioned in passing.
RH> OK, and apparantly you saw nobody we know out there.

 ML> Probably not.

No call from our daughter saying she saw you either. Didn't expect her
to unless you got up to the North LV area and visited the school she
works at.

Catch you later,
Ruth
