Nancy Backus Said to DAVE DRUM about Re: Houses

NB> NB>> I've seen a number of pictures and floor plans for those Sears
NB> NB>> houses... quite respectable... :) I'll try to take a look at
NB> NB>> your grandparents version... :)

NB> DD> There was a whole neighbourhood of them in an area called the
NB> DD> "Standard Addition" (I assume to the town limits/plat book) of
NB> DD> two hundred or more homes. I've seen it noted in other searches
NB> DD> so it's a somewhat well known phenomenon. Little old
NB> DD> Carlinville, IL - whose only other claim to fame is a
NB> DD> courthouse with a "perfect dome" -- whatever that is -- which
NB> DD> is apparently a pretty rare thing.

NB> I did take a peek. It looks quite similar on the outside (except
NB> for the full porch) as our next-door neighbor's house. Hers also
NB> has the three bedrooms and bath upstairs and the living
NB> room/dining/kitchen downstairs with the wide archways to living and
NB> dining rooms... but arranged a little differently. I don't know if
NB> hers was a Sears house, or just a nice example of an American

Probably might have been a Sears - I sorted through a lot of pictures
and floor plans on a number of sites before I found the exact one that
my grandparents had. There are a lot of minor variations with different
names. Bv)=

NB> Four-Square. It was built very early 1900's. Most of the other
NB> houses on our block are quite different from hers, too. From what
NB> I've read, the Sears houses were quite popular in the mid-west...
NB> maybe not so much here in the east... :)

Well, freight from Chicago to central Illinois was probably a lot less
than freight to Outstate New York. And Sears was a Chicago company until
K-Mart bought them. Their main competitor was Montgomery Ward - also a
Chicago firm until they went totally tits-up.

When they built our maul on the outskirts of town Monkey Wards anchored
one end and Serious and Blowback the other. Wards is long gone and their
auto-service centre is currently a Longhorn Steak House. Seriously
Getback still has the north end of the building ... for now. K-Mart is
making noise about building a Meijer-style Super K-Mart across the
street from the mall. Which will close one Big K-Mart and move the Sears
operations into the resulting operation. We'll see what eventuates.

NB> DD>>> Checking with Georgia (who does family trees/relationships,
NB> DD>>> etc)

NB>>> BTW... how is she...?

NB> DD>> Hard to say. She seems more worried about her ol' man and her
NB> DD>> daughter than herself. But, her health can't be getting any
NB> DD>> better. Bv(=

NB> NB>> Give her my regards, if you get a chance. It
NB> NB>> was a pleasure to meet her at my very first picnic... and I
NB> NB>> kept hoping she (and of course, you, too) would have shown up
NB> NB>> at subsequent ones... :)

NB> DD> I may be able to make it to another one or two now that I am
NB> DD> eligible for paid vacations, etc. We'll see what eventuates.

NB> Something to look forward to... :)

NB> DD>>> learned that the founding president of the Prairie Farms
NB> DD>>> Dairy Co-op when they transitioned from Producer's Creamery
NB> DD>>> was from two farms over from my Grandparents home farm. Guy
NB> DD>>> named Remling (lotsa Germans and Poles in the area).
NB> NB>>> That does make it almost family. :)

NB> DD>> Almost - I dated one of the daughters until her brothers
NB> DD>> ratted me out.

NB> NB>> Because they didn't think you good enough for them...? Too
NB> NB>> bad for them... ;0

NB> DD> Wrong religion. Her family was very stiff-necked religious of
NB> DD> the German Catholic persuasion and (at the time) I was a pretty
NB> DD> relaxed low-church Episcopalian.

NB> Ah. Probably even high-church Episcopalian/Anglican wouldn't have
NB> met their qualifications, although that might have almost... ;) I
NB> know, back then the lines were strongly drawn. I remember the
NB> hassle my Latin teacher had to take her (Protestant) class to a
NB> Latin mass, just so that we could hear it actually spoken/chanted...
NB> :)

I was an altar boy in a high church Episcopal (St. Paul's Cathedral)
congregation -- if you can picture me as wearing a red cassock and white
surplice -- but, the incense literally turned my stomach ... so I gave
that up.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Bread Pudding
 Categories: Breads, Dairy, Eggs, Pudding
      Yield: 4 servings

      4 sl White bread; scored
      1 c Powdered sugar
    1/4 lb Butter
      3 c Milk
      3 lg Eggs
    2/3 c Granulated sugar
           Nutmeg

Place bread in casserole dish. Combine the powdered sugar
and butter. DO NOT MELT THE BUTTER, set out and let it
come to room temperature. Sprinkle this mixture over top
  of bread.

Combine milk, eggs and granulated sugar. Beat together and
pour over the bread, powdered sugar and butter. Sprinkle
  nutmeg over the top.

Bake at 375oF/190oC for about 45 minutes or until a knife
comes out clean. You can check the corners and see if the
pudding lifts up good, or you can let the bread get brown.

A lady always brings this to a church supper and there is
never any left. This is the small version, so if you're
planning to serve to a crowd, double it.

  Serves four nicely
