NB>>> I suppose that hamburgers are one thing that one could usually find
NB>>> almost anywhere one went, that she could generally recognize as safe.
ML>> But it's so constricting, and I don't understand it.
NB>> I only understand it in the abstract.
ML> Well, go traveling with someone like that for a while.
ML> You'd understand in the concrete in short order.

Except that you just said that you don't understand it.. ;) For both
of us, it's trying to understand someone else's odd outlook on food. ;)

ML> Speaking of which, I have a couple upgrade certificates
ML> that are expiring in April, so Lilli wants to go to Smyrna
ML> or Rhodes, odd choices. What she will eat there I don't
ML> know - she'll probably spend a huge premium for lamb kebabs
ML> overlooking the Aegean, while I feast cheaply (I hope) on
ML> local shellfish. Odd that she's come to like lamb, which to
ML> me has quite a strong flavor.

Reminds her of hamburger, probably.. ;) It will be another adventure,
no doubt... :) Is that likely to be before or after Easter...?

NB>> I'd rather find something new that looked at all appealing... when
 NB>> in London, I remember finding a hole-in-the-wall Indian/Pakastani
NB>> (I think) place, rather than looking for "safe" food... ;)
ML> It's said that chicken tikka masala is the closest thing
ML> that the Brits have to a national dish nowadays.

I've heard that, too... :) I don't remember what we had, though... it
was almost 30 years ago, now... :)

NB>> And that, with an 11-year-old in tow, to boot.
NB>> We did, once anyway, check out Wimpy's, just for the fun of it...
 ML> That's something I've not done yet.

Don't bother. Unless things have improved substantially, it's pretty
mediocre... wouldn't do it again... ;) Richard had had a burger there,
on a class trip (to England and France), back when he was in high
school, and had talked about it, so it was on the agenda, at least as a
possible... ;)

ML>> Once in a while I encounter someone (Lilli doesn't pretend
ML>> to this) who claims extra-sensitive taste buds as the reason
ML>> for his/her unadventurousness; I kind of doubt this, though.
NB>> I'd've thought extra-sensitive taste buds should lead to more
NB>> adventurousness, actually... One should be able to taste more
NB>> nuances, and make even better comparisons/contrasts...
ML> Perhaps, but the claim goes with the claim that strong and
ML> distinctive flavors cause something rather like physical pain.

Oh, that sort of extra sensitivity... what a sad situation...

ML> I've encountered this occasionally when my tongue seizes up at
ML> something incredibly overskewed in the direction of one of the
ML> four standard tastes. Or bizarrely fishy (as in rancid seal meat).

Dunno as I've ever had physical pain... a few tastes have caused stomach
flip-flops...

ML>> Soon I'll tell you about Alex's friend Kevin who
 ML>> eats only a limited diet and is pretty neurotic about it;
ML>> he's a nice enough kid, but his whininess about food - he
ML>> makes no pretense of being a good sport about it - would be
ML>> almost enough to cross him off my friends list.
ML> As I'm describing in my Las Vegas report, which finishes
ML> in this packet, he's a nice enough kid, but not really
ML> appropriate as fine dining company. I saw him only for a
ML> couple hours on a couple occasions, and his whininess started
 ML> getting to me.

From the report, I can see why... :) Maybe he'll grow out of it, but I
don't think I'd hold my breath waiting... ;)

ML> With Lilli, it took several years of both of us
ML> grinning and bearing it before the first sparks flew, in Korea
ML> not too long ago, and it was triggered by my taking her to a
 ML> place where I thought she would eat well - a bulgogi house;
ML> unfortunately, she prefers dry-grilled meats, not marinated
ML> stuff such as you get in Seoul food restaurants, and the
ML> sort of half-grilled half-stewed stuff she got reminded her
ML> too much of microwaved leftovers.

Ah, well... you two are travel companions more than dining companions,
after all... ;) And unstated expectations are rather hard to fulfil as
well... ;) Guess you've learned one more thing that won't meet hers...

NB>> Certainly wouldn't make eating with him much of a pleasure, to be
 NB>> sure... ;0
ML> Wasn't. I don't see why Alex keeps him around.

Probably has other reasons... like having an uncomplaining designated
driver on hand... :)

ML>> I can see the merits of a good steak frites, but not
ML>> several times a week alternating with burgers and oatmeal
ML>> and the occasional omelet or egg salad ...
NB>> Could get boring quite quickly, eh...?
ML> tttt, I will eat a monodiet once in a while and tolerate it
ML> quite well if it's beef.

But that's different, eh...? :)

ML> I used to be able to eat 25c worth of pasta a day for a week to
ML> save money to blow on those $50 ($100+ in today's dollars)
ML> dinners that I used to have with Nicholas, but no more, and that
ML> might have contributed to my current dubious state of health.
ML> But it was only my body that got ruined by that, not my taste buds.

Well, it was for a "good cause", after all... :) I've not been quite
so mono diet... and not likely to get away with it now, either, with
Richard not liking to have the same thing twice in a row, generally.
