NB>> IF, and that's a BIG if, any car of ours made it to being resold as

DD> OK, so you buy mostly new cars, then.

All 3 of them... ;) Over the space of 30+ years... My first car was
new in 1970... it was finally replaced in '82 with another new (but
somewhat grapefuity, not quite a lemon) that didn't last that well, and
was replaced in '89 with a new one. That was the one that the '05 Volvo
replaced, in Dec of '07... Richard's cars were mostly used, from his
'68 VW bug that had been his brother's, on... At one point, just before
my first car died, he did buy a van new to replace the TelCo junker van
that finally died... but otherwise the only one he bought new was the
'98 Volvo station wagon, which he is still driving. Usually the new car
was mine to drive, and then he'd drive it into the ground when the time
came... when my Shadow got undependable, we switched cars until we got
the current one I'm driving... I think we are hoping now not to have to
buy any more, new or used... ;)

DD> The last new car I bought was in
 DD> 1973 - a Mercury Montego. I traded it in on a "used" (it had 1600
DD> miles on it) Ford van and later bought it back from a used car lot -
DD> because it was a nice car and I got a deal on it.

So at least yours weren't all that used at that point... nice to get the
merc back... ;)

NB>> I can imagine... isn't bells and whistles part of the definition of
NB>> Benz or BMW...? (our son has a Beemer he got used) (G)

DD> Not so many as on the Jeep Grand Cherokee that they rented at my work
DD> while one of the utilitarian Chevy Express vans was in hospital. I had
DD> to read the manual to figure out how to start the dratted thing and
DD> get it out of "PARK". Sheesh ... talk about counter-intuitive.

Isn't that one supposed to be the equivalent of the Hum3...? "Luxury"
trumps drivability... ;)

DD> We have a "Center For The Arts" which is in the former Masonic Temple
DD> (they moved to the outskirts, too) and a lot of Abe Lincoln stuff (old
DD> State Capitol, Lincoln Museum and Lincoln Presidential Library) and
DD> the businesses which leech money out of tourist's purses. But, no
DD> shopping or entertainment unless the Center For The Arts has something
DD> going on - or for the saloon goers - occasional live music.
DD> Sangamon Auditorium at University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is
DD> faaaaaar south of town. And host the major entertainments like Willie
DD> Nelson, BB King, Nancy Wilson, Jersey Boys (road show). Hal Holbrook
DD> in Mark Twain Tonight was there a few years ago. That sort of thing.
DD> Oh, and the Springfield Symphony and Illinois Symphony Orchestra also
DD> play there rather than at the Center For The Arts - which only has the
DD> Springfield Ballet Co and Springfield Youth Orchestra for long-hair
 DD> entertainment.

All the major shows come to downtown, here, pretty much... :) Except
for the acts that come to the colleges, which are all around the
outskirts mostly, except for Eastman School of Music... U of R is still
within the city limits, although not right downtown... and Monroe Comm
College is just outside the limits, so we do tend to have more closer
in. There are some other arts venues, like the Jewish Community Center,
which are likewise in the close in suburbs... The road shows are
usually at the Auditorium Theater, which is downtown... Most of the
major museums are either downtown or at least still within the city
limits, not far from downtown...

And then we have all sorts of restaurants and clubs right downtown, as
well as all around town, and in the close and not so close suburbs. Lots
of ethnic restaurants of all types, from the various Asian (Chinese,
Japanese, Thai, Indian, Vietmanese, etc), to Ethiopian and other African
to almost anything you could think of... The major chains tend to be
more in the outer suburbs... near the malls... ;)
