=============================
*** Quoting Aleksej R. Serdyukov from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

CS> Ok, found a better site if you can use it. At the least, the pictures
CS> will help. www.everythingchopsticks.com

ARS> A bright (happy) site. :)

Yup! Click the link to the japanese style ones and you can see they are what I
use. Same thing. I have some other styles but those are easier for me.

CS> The ones i backtracked to your link are to me, too thick for real use.
CS> They are not disposables, but they are just too fat at the bottom
CS> end. I've never seen ones like that in real life. It's almost like

ARS> From the site, I conclude that the bottom end is the thin end. Then th
ARS> still hope about the 4-pair set. :)

I have yet to look up the 4 pair set but will. Meantime, yes the thinner end
is the 'bottom' and what you eat from. The ones in the 5 pack, looked to be
aboutas wide at the thinnest end as a fingernail or perhaps your pinky finger
and that would be very hard to use.

BTW, if you get 'HOME_COOKING' this topic fits a bit better there but I am sure
the Hinton's will be patient as we answer a few questions. Nice little thread
going there too on the same topic.

CS> My favorite sets have a slight ribbed pattern down the bottom 1/5 or
CS> so and make it easier to use. Very common here though smooth ones
CS> work too.

ARS> Aha, somebody wrote that they preferred square ones over round ones be
ARS> of that.

Yes. I like the rounder ones but the slightly squared ones are also very
usable. The disposable ones are squared long thin segments of light wood,
lightly sanded to prevent splinters but not polished. They are not separated
at the top until you pull them apart to use them.

CS> BTW, once you get used to chopsticks (proper name in internet searches
CS> BTW)

ARS> Ok, I've only been searching with a Russian name equivalent to (of?) t
ARS> subject.

No problem! Thats an 'Americanized name' but it worked well for searches. I
have no idea if you can order from all of those sites, because most require a
major credit card. Dunno how common those are where you are. The pictures
though are accurate at the link I sent you.

Here's an alternative. Netmail me your mailing address. I leave for sea in 3
days but when I get back, if you do not mind being patient, I can mail you
some simple ones. The real stuff real people here use daily. 100 yen shop
has a nice selection. I can get you a set of 4 and 2 sets of 'fancy ones' for
300yen. Dont worry about the cost, it would be more trouble than it would be
worth to try to pay me back ;-) as we dont exchange money that easy. 300yen
is a bit less than the price of a simple lunch and wont put me out any at all.

I might add some chopstick rests and a few other interesting items for japanese
cookery? Maybe a 'china spoon' or so.

CS> you will find that some cooking is easier by far with them.
CS> Like, flipping over bacon slices. You can do that with other tools,
CS> but a chopstick is much faster and easier.

ARS> I imagine this. For pancakes and alike.

Humm. American version of a 'pancake' would be very hard to do with chopsticks
but from reading recipes, yours are a quite different item and far more 'firm'
so it would be doable.
                                       xxcarol
