bin Laden, the founder and presumably still head of al-Qaeda, started out 
fighting the Russian forces occupying Afghanistan.  He is quite likely
considered
a hero in that country, even today.  Anyhow, al-Qaeda is an outgrowth of his
activities during that period.  After Russia pulled her forces out of
Afghanistan
he needed another enemy to fight in order to keep his organization together,
and
decided it would be the US; that was around 1991 or 1992.  His original beef
with the US (and with the Saudi government) was the fact that the Saudi
government allowed the US to station forces on its soil - although they were
kept hundreds of miles away from the Islamic holy cities.

I don't think that al-Qaeda is affiliated with any particular branch of Islam.
Iran and Iraq are the only Muslim countries that are majority Shia, all of the
others - most specifically Saudi Arabia - are majority Sunni.

You might see a some other countries providing support for those fighting
the US in the middle east if that happens.

Which, in this case, was a legitimate reason to go to war.  There was no
similar reason to invade and conquer Iraq.

They *say* they want to do it.  I don't think the Serbian government is as
pro-western as you seem to think it is.  The current administration has done
more to alienate this country from just about every other country on the planet
than any other administration in the past century or more.

Several commentators and other ordinary folks have noted that Mr. Bush is the
